Old deer hunting attire...
I always liked the "Good Old Days" of hunting attire and arms. This PA deer season on the Monday after Thanksgiving I hope to dress the part. I just obtained a M1894 .30/30 Winchester Rifle with 24-inch octogon barrel made in 1919. I worked up some accuracy loads with IMR3031 and 150 grain jacketed bullets-that was the easy part.
About 30 years ago I was way up in Maine on a case and stopped by a general store. I saw a pair of high lace lumberjack boots in my size on the shelf. The price was $20.00. The boots have been polished and waterproofed. Last year the wife found two pair of Woolrich plaid hunting pants at Goodwill for $5.00 each in my size. One of the pants had "$9.50" on the tag. That had to be long ago. My goal is to go afield this PA deer season dressed circa 1929. My wife has a digital camera and will post the photo here of me kitted out with the M1894 rifle. I still need to find the proper coat and hat. I have 7 months to get my kit completed. Adam

Gold-Pan,
Swift nailed it; I am looking for a Pennsylvania Tuxedo. I have the red/black plaid pants. I now need a Large or XL coat and appropriate hat. I have alerted the Goodwill store to call me if any show up. I got the high top lace-up boots in a store above Millinocket someplace. On my way back to NH, I always stopped by Kittery Trading Post. not as cheap as Goodwill, but just do a simple search on "Pennsylvania Tuxedo" and you'll find plenty of online stores out there selling the Woolrich product

Adam, you probably are aware that Woolrich has an outlet store. In that store they have a department that sells 2nds- garments with small defects they don't want to ship. Perfectly useable, and lower cost.
Where is this store, some may ask? Why, Woolrich, Pennsylvania, of course.

My Grandpa used to wear whatever he had available at the time....didn't have a special coat, ect for hunting; he just used his 'everyday' stuff which he used while working (he used to work on the car ferry between Ludington, MI and Milwaukee, WI.). The clothes that he wore there to keep warm he wore while deer hunting to keep him warm. Usually items made of wool, and an insulated cap.
Does PA have a hunter orange rule? If so, how do plan to 'curcumvent' that issue, as hunter orange wasn't available or required back in the 20's?

Mr. 16 gauge,
You have a keen observation! Yes, PA has a hunter orange rule since about 1970. I plan to take the pictures by the barn or tractor shed and then go up the track with a hunter orange vest over the Woolrich coat to comply with current applicable rules. Adam

I will get in my closet when I get home and see what I can find in vintage wool red/black plaid hunting coats. There even might be a wool hat around some where that I bought just before our hunter orange regs came in.
Ain't nothing like wool for being quiet in the woods while still hunting. Its to bad that all my wool stuff SHRUNK over the years. Wool is still warm even when it is wet. One time I stopped in our dry cleaner/tailor shop to shoot the breeze with the owner. He had just finished dry cleaning his personally tailored red wool hunting out fit complete with tapered britches with laces, shirt, and coat after he got back from deer camp. It was an outfit to die for Last edited by multibeard; 04-09-2009 at 05:31 AM. |

multibeard,
I found my grandfather's Camapign hat from WWI in my mom's attic. It fits me and, in lieu of a Woolrich hat, I will use the "Doughboy" Campaign hat for pictures by the barn in the near future. If I find a Woolrich hat, then Mary Lou will be taking several Deer Hunter pictures. The deer are very accomodating on this matter, I suppose. Adam

I have a hankerin for a mountain man get-up. Something from around 1830 - 1850. Buckskin and furs stuff to go with my new Great Plains Rifle (if I ever get it finished). Sometimes I think I was born a couple hundred years too late anyway....

Don't laugh but I still wear the old wool stuff. None of the new hi tech clothing is as good a wool. I wear those old green pants with a wool LLBean coat most of time and as far as I'm concerned its the best. Then on the other hand I do have Goretex boots and gloves. Go figure.

I finally remembered to look and see what I had in the closet as far as wool coats were concerned. There are two that I think are both large. Let me know if you are interested. Both are heavy duty but not wolrich. On is the real dark style of red plaid and the other is lighter. let me know if you might be interested in one of them as for some reason like alot of my clothes they have seemed to have shrunk and no longer fit. PM me your phone and we can discuss them if you are interested. tom |
