I think that clears it up in my mind. At a recent Urban Carbine class the instructor (a retired Marine) mentioned that the Marines are now saying that, shot intensly, the barrel life of an M4 is as little as 3,000 rounds before the throat errodes. When shot the normal way we always expected to get a whole lot more than that out of them. The difference of course is that instead of 50 rounds a year we now put 500 - 1000 rounds a day through them! I have not seen the report but the guy is pretty reliable. My shot out barrel is only 3 years old and I have not used it nearly as hard as some do (but that barrel was not chrome lined either). On the other hand, on a few occasions it was not allowed to cool off between shots and it smoked a few times. Good thing they are easy to replace. Thanks! Riposte
