Dan,

In January 1940, President Roosevelt relocated our Pacific Fleet from San Diego to Pear Harbor. The Japanese protested that fleet relocation in a diplomatic note.

On December 7, 1941 we had 105 ships and 485 aircraft parked on the Hawaiian Islands. Only the destroyer Ward was patrolling outside the harbor and did shoot a Jap mini sub. I understand the peacetime mentality and no ship or plane patrols far out to sea. We learned a lot on December 7, 1941 and the brave military folks did their duty as best they could....

My uncle was aboard the USS Maryland on that date. It sustained damage to the forward part of the ship but was able to return to the states for repair. He was transferred to the USS Massachusetts where he served for the remainder of the war.

He never spoke much of it until I enlisted in 1966. He told me that he saw the Arizona get hit and explode. Never really got over it. He is gone now but I think of him every 12/8.
