Gun Owners Taunt Big-City Mayor
By KRISTEN GELINEAU

MIDLOTHIAN, Virginia (March 19) - Amid the flags of the old South's Confederacy, anti-Yankee bumper stickers and Civil War relics on display at Bob Moates Sport Shop, a counterattack against the North is under way.

York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg's federal lawsuits against gun dealers in five states have drawn the wrath of Virginia's gun enthusiasts.

"Ask about the Bloomberg Gun GiveAway" reads a sign taped to the gun shop's register, beckoning customers to enter the drawing named for New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, whose federal lawsuits against gun dealers in five states have drawn the wrath of Virginia's gun enthusiasts.

Bloomberg says the dealers holding the contest are sick. The dealers call Bloomberg names that are not fit to print.

"The truth is, if Bloomberg hadn't picked on Virginia, we wouldn't have gotten involved. But he made the mistake of stepping into Virginia with this," said Philip Van Cleave, president of the pro-gun Virginia Citizens Defense League and mastermind of the giveaway, which has boosted business for the two participating store owners.

The Republican mayor has sued 27 out-of-state gun dealers, alleging they sold firearms illegally to undercover private investigators conducting a sting for New York. City officials say the dealers have supplied hundreds of weapons used in New York City crimes. The lawsuits, which name dealers in Georgia, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina and Virginia, ask the court to require monitoring of the shops' sales.

Investigators tried to make "straw purchases," in which one person fills out the legal forms and buys a gun for someone else. The practice is prohibited by federal law and is typically used by those who cannot legally own firearms, such as convicted felons.

Nine dealers, including two in Virginia, have settled with the city, agreeing to be monitored by a court-appointed special master. The owners of two Virginia stores being sued said they were forced to close because of crushing legal fees.

But in January, two other store owners began fighting back with the gun giveaway.

Through March 31, customers who spend $100 (euro75) at either of Bob Moates' stores or at Old Dominion Guns and Tackle in Danville are eligible to win a handgun or a rifle, courtesy of the Defense League. The drawing will be held April 19.

Van Cleave said he came up with the idea as a way to boost sales at the stores, which have shelled out thousands in legal fees.

The contest has only further agitated Bloomberg, who has made gun control a top priority in his second term.

"These are sick people," Bloomberg said in January at the Mayors Against Illegal Guns summit in Washington. "And if they think that this is funny, I don't think that the parents or the spouses or the children of those that get killed with illegal guns would find that very entertaining."

Dave Hancock, who has worked at Bob Moates Sport Shop for 25 years, said of the mayor: "I think he's an idiot."

Bloomberg and others say the lawsuits are aimed at reducing the flow of illegal guns into New York. Mayoral spokesman Jason Post said police statistics show that 90 percent of the guns used in crimes in New York City come from out of state.

But Hancock and other Virginia gun-rights advocates say the lawsuits are nothing more than a publicity stunt and a scheme to drive gun dealers out of business.

Richard Hill, manager of Bob Moates Sport Shop, called the lawsuits a "nice attempt by a politician just trying to get to the White House" and said his store always follows the law.

"The best way to get guns off the street and criminals off the street is to lock 'em up," Hill said. "They seem to want to pick on an old stereotype: It's so easy to get a gun in Virginia and run it up to New York. When quite honestly, you can break into a house anywhere and get anything you like."

Bloomberg's face is on a poster taped to a shotgun rack at Bob Moates, under the words "Here are our worst enemy." Sarah Brady of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence and Wisconsin Gov. Jim Doyle are also pictured, though Bloomberg's face is circled in bright pink highlighter.

The winner will receive a Para-Ordnance handgun worth around $900.

Longtime customer Scott Cashion, 31, of Chesterfield, said he has earned six or seven tickets - and may end up with more to get back at Bloomberg.

"I bought some kind of for spite," he said while looking over a stack of ammunition. "What he's doing is wrong."

The winner of the contest at Old Dominion Guns and Tackle will get a Browning Varmint Stalker rifle, also worth about $900.

"I've been in business 27 years and I've probably had the best February I've ever had," store owner Dennis Alverson said. "Nobody's got a great likeness for Bloomberg in this area."

I spent my money at Bob's...he's bout 1 hour east of me....I encourage anybody near here to join in the fight....that Yank done got us riled now!

Here is where these dorks always seem to cross over to the political twilight zone, hence ILLEGAL GUNS.

Said way too many times before, but why do they not concentrate on taking the guns away from crooks, and not us?

So because people died over Peter Pan Peanut butter, shouldn't they ban all peanutbutter? It's the same screwed up logic to me.

I must have missed something.

What is wrong with busting people that break the law?

Please explain.

Hey Blktail??

In regards to what? are you questioning the article? Or what?

Bloomberg is a Presidential hopeful with an awful lot of Money. He is suing gun dealers in other parts of the country because a gun got used in a crime in NYC. It's called hit the little guys cause they don't have the money to fight us. Criminals get guns from criminal activity for the most part. If I happened to sell a gun 20 yrs ago that is used in a crime in NYC why should I as a dealer be sued?? What it boils down to is agree to go along with our requirements or we'll put you out of business

Maybe I missed the point, but I thought that the complaint was about sting operations on gun dealers catching them in the act of selling guns illegally.

I fully agree that dealers should not be responsible for legally sold firearms subsequently being used illegally or carelessly.

What I don't get is if the problem is criminals with guns, why doesn't Bloomberg lobby lawmakers to put the crooks behind bars for a longer time doing harder time? Same with car thieves.

Bloomberg is like a lot of East coasters who think a stance of being "tough on crime," is to parrot what plays well in the liberal press. Is presidential candidate Rudy any different? Scratch Rudy, scratch Bloomberg and you're likely to find Hillary.

This isn't what they have in mind. They have to blame some inanimate object rather than the scum sucking pig that does the crime. The liberal trash mouth part is they can't help it they were downtrodden and people treated them mean. When they realize that people have to be responsible for their actions is when we will get a handle on the crime problem...worldwide

But what about dealers that break the law selling their wares?

Shouldn't they be treated as harshly as the criminals that buy the guns?

Dealers

Blktail...not too many dealers break the law...at least not grossley. And most of the time unknowingly. It is very hard being a dealer. And keeping the license. There are way too many rules that are easily broken. And the BATF makes new rules almost monthly. Not laws...rules! To give you an idea. On my last inspection of my records I received a violation for missing a question on the 4473. A State Police Sergeant had failed to answer the question about whether he had renounced his citizenship(a really stupid question as an alien can buy a gun in the US) My fault because I missed his omission. The BATF inspector got bent out of shape over it. I couldn't just fill it out for the cop..I actually had to call him to ask if he could come in and check no on the form..even though 4 days after that purchase he had bought another rifle and filled out the questionnaire correctly. Technically they could actually take your license from you for something so minor. you know here in the US it is fairly easy to buy and sell guns..even from a private citizen. Here in Wyoming you see them advertised every day. Crooks historically steal theirs from people or buy them from a private person. Lickily we still have the right to own and dispose of firearms privately. I dread the day we cannot. I do try to be a little careful who I sell a firearm to.

This Bloomberg thing is basically boiled down to the fact that they want access to all the BATF records of gun purchases..which is illegal under the Laws of the US. They want to be able to use the records to harrass and sue legally operating firearms dealers. Who is next? The little old lady who's husband passed away who may have sold some of his guns??...Legally I might add

Now of course if a dealer is selling firearms illegally he will and should be dealt with by the law... But this isn't really what the Bloomberg mess is all about. If these dealers were doing something illegal They would no longer be in business. This is about power. They have the money and trhe dealer can't stay in business if he has to pay lawyers fees to fight the big guys. Kinda like fighting the gummit.

Now as an aside the cop actually showed up at the shop while the guy was doing the records check. I didn't get to call him. He just came in. I told him what was going on. He was a little indignant when the BATF guy got on his case. He even said how about a little professional courtesy. BATF guy said he broke the law. Well, he filled out the question. He got ready to leave and the BATF guy asked the easiest way to another shop in Delaware. I told him..the cop left...and about 30 mins later the BATF guy went. The cop later told me he was patrolling his normal beat and the BATF guy came by him doing 73 in a 50 MPH zone. When the cop was writing the ticket..for 175 bucks..the BATF guy actually asked for a little professional courtesy. The cops reply??..Can't do it..you broke the law!

Yes there is a higher Authority

The guy came back to my shop the next day accusing me of setting him up too. I didn't do nothing. The cop left before he did..and we were 5 ft from each other so I didn't set him up. Boy he was steamed though! Cop called me a few days later and told me the story! He laughed so hard... And so did I
