New skillet lid

I just got a lid for one of my cast iron skillets and there's a residue that looks a lot like rust on the underside. The tag said it was pre-seasoned so it shouldn't be rust but I've never seen anything like this on any of my cast iron. Any ideas as to what it may be?

Just a guess but the previous owner might have done a half fast job of seasoning. Take a wire brush to it and re-season it. See what happens.

The previous owner might not have known his butt from his elbow.

Best wishes, Bill

Nope...

The previous owner was Cabelas. The lid is made by Lodge and I bought it brand new. If it had been used the first thing I'd have done was brush and reseason it.
