270 wthby mag, 24 or 26 inch barrell.

if you were going to buy a 270 weatherby mag, would you opt for the 24 or 26 inch barrel if you had a choice?

gun used for antelope-deer-possible back up on elk.
gun will be shot in open-country,
gun will also be up tree stands, shooting fairly close quarters.
most shots however under 300 yards.
thanks.

I know alot of people how like the 24" bbl's and think the 26" is too clumsy to carry,, but I have always thought that in the weatherby calibers the longer the better,, may not be true,, but ine all carry the 26" tube

I have a 270 Weatherby Mag with a 24" barrel, a 300 Weatherby Mag with a 24" barrel and a 7 Weatherby Mag with a 26" barrel. Personally. I prefer the 24" especially walking through aspen groves and high brush and deer, antelope, and elk won't know the difference.

You Need To Be Trained

Without the 26 in barrel the 270 mag is just another 270. The reason I will not own a magnum is because I don't like long barrels. Many times I've seen nimrods with 7mm mags and 22 inch barrels. Their only fooling themselves. A 7m-08 with a 22 inch barrel will out perform a 7mm mag with the same 22 inch barrel. I will admit that the short barreled magnums make a big flash and bang. That's what nimrods really like.

Well if you want a 28" barrel but do not like the overall length of the rifle then get a compact single shot action :p the rifle with a 26" barrel will likely be the same length or shorter even than a bolt action with a 22" barrel.

I do feel that some folks make a Mountain out of a Molehill over this overall legth thing :rolleyes: have never really had a problem with it myself and it amazes me that the upland hunters seem to get by using semi auto shotguns with 28" barrels without too many problems.

Having chronoed all my rifles, 24 and 26", I'd definitely go the 26.
That little 2" difference really shows up. JMO

Dear Hofts;

I want to offer my opinion on your bbl length question. Are you planning on carrying this rifle in heavy brush, open field, or a little of both. I think optimum accuracy and maximum bullet punch will come from a 26" barrel. But, bullet placement with any calibre or barrel lenght is critical and humane!
