PJgunnner,

The 280 AI is not a wildcat but an improved cartridge. How can it be a wildcat if it shoots factory loads? One could shoot factory loads forever in an improved chamber and never handload it! Not only that but the 280 AI is a SAAMI cartridge and in fact loaded by Nosler!

If you say that your 150 gr 270 load is safe in three rifles what did HP White report? Show us the data please.

As to the magazine article I have not read it.

There is other data however. Nosler #5 shows a max of 2905 fps with a 24" bbl in the old 270 and 3007 fps out of the WSM verison with the same length tube.

Here is the maximum velocity from the Hogdon site for the old 270 150 GR. HDY
COL: 3.285"
H1000 59.0 C 2831
51,000 CUP, 24" bbl.

Here is the maximum velocity for the WSM version with the same length tube.
150 GR. HDY SP (Maximum Load) COL: 2.740"
RETUMBO 70.0C 3071

So there you have it. On top of that the WSM is available in lighter rifles. Whats not to like?

If there is an advantage, it sure doesn't justify me spending about a $1,000 (i.e., gun, dies, etc.) for each new magnum to gain that advantage because it is way too small. I can find other things to spend the money on.

With that said, I am thinking about buying an AR-10(T) Ultra which is chambered in the .300 WSM cartridge. That cartridge does have a decent advantage over the .308 and I want the rifle anyway, so I figured I'd get it in the hopped up cartridge since it isn't available in .300 Win. If the .300 WSM drops off the face of the earth, I can always buy a .308 upper for the gun.
the ultra mags ain't really all that ultra either. when you are almost doubling powder charges to get 200-400 fps difference whats the big frikken deal.

i also agree with pauls dissertation.
