Another new rifle test

The Remington 700 Light Varmint.
We picked up one of these from our Friendly neighborhood Remington Rep. The rifle is a stainless steel Remington 700 in one of their Kevlar reinforced(plastic) pillar bedded stocks. Bbl length is 22 inches and the bbl is about a medium weight with flutes. It seems to be very stiff and wasn't very heavy at about 7 lbs 11 oz with scope and mounts. Caliber was .223 Rem and the scope was a Bushnell Elite 3200 4X12X40 in Leupold rings and bases. BTW this scope was one of the clearest scopes I have ever mounted on a rifle. Nicer than my Leupold 4X12X40. Also has a lifetime warranty. The calibers the rifle are available in are a little different though. 17 Rem,204 Ruger, 221 Rem Fireball, 223, 22-250, 7MM-08 and of course 308. A few different calibers than normal.
We bore sighted the rifle and went to the range. We brushed and swabbed the bore between shots. After getting the rifle sighted in(3 shots) we proceeded to shoot a few groups. First was with some Mil spec 55 gr Federal ammo. It shot pretty well as the first group was slightly under an inch...just say an inch cause it was really close. Tried some Fed Premium 52 gr HPBT match ammo next. Whew...this stuff will shoot. First real 5 round group was .78 inch. The best I could do(I ain't a great rifle shooter) was .990. My friend who was doing the shooting turned in 5 (5 round) groups all under .80 inches. That's hard to improve on...even with good reloads. The factories are really making some good shooting ammo now days. This rifle shoots great off the bench. If you mount a bipod on it I think it would make a great Coyote rifle especially if you hunt with snowshoes in the winter or whatever. Trigger was much better than the last 700 we did. This one weighed 3.75 lbs from the factory. This rifle is somewhat expensive at about 950 bucks retail (we didn't pay that) and I would think the market for this configuration would be pretty small. But what do I know about rifle marketing. If you may have a need for a rifle like this one give it a check. This one sure did shoot. Next test is going to be something different. We have acquired a New Savage ML 110 II...the smokeless powder muzzle loader. Test right after the muzzy season is over. BTW it has the new Accu Trigger ...and it is great.

ive been thinkn i want one lately.

i think the market for light weight stiff barreld carry rig is bigger than we might think. this rifle is also carrying over into the deer size calibers. i wouldnt be suprised if we see some more 257 277 243 calibers offerd in this rifle in the next year or so.

if i was to walk into the store and they had 204 and 223 in the rife idont know wich one id walk out with.

thisa rifle i think is great for all around hunting and varmiting. in package that you can carry more than a few hundred yards

Rifles

E03 ...you may be right This may be a really nice type of rifle to have. It really is carryable. Wish the bbl was 24 in tho. Don't know why but think I would like the 221 myself?? Just crazy I guess. . Don't think you'll see a new bunch of calibers to fit this rifle tho. Asked the Rep and he said he didn't think so. He is still certain Rem is gonna come out with a new semi auto shotgun.

i would also prefer a 24" tube but got to thinkn that in the 204 221 and 223 that it realy isnt needed. the velocity difrence wont be missed in these calibers lacking the 2"s of barrel.

i almost dont see how reminton could sleep at night if they didnt offer this beauty of a rifle in there deer calibers.

i dont see any semi auto shotguns comeing out anytime soon, we just got the 332 over and under

as were sitn now the lv sf is chamberd in one deer caliber the 7mm08, it is also chamberd in the 308 but this chambering is only a special run and will not be part of the rifles caliber list.

i guess im dreaming but id realy love to see the 243 260 6mmrem and possibly the 257 rob

in all reality the only caliber i bet they ad is the 260 because remington seems to have thing for it, uless they get wild and decide the WSM's would be at home chamberd in this rifle

can you tell im bored???

thanks for posting your results, geve me something to think and talk about

Hello Evan03,

I wouldn't bet on seeing the model 700BDL in any calibers after this year. Remington dropped the ADL this year in favor of the SPS model which comes in Synthetics only. The new model CDL seems to be offered in almost all calibers, and left handed models. It has more classic lines than the BDL model. I suspect this will be the new flagship model. It's just one mans opinion, but I suspect I'm correct on this one. Any other opinions out there? Best wishes.

Cal - Montreal
