New CZ 452

The past 20 years found me buying a bunch of pistols, centerfire rifles and shotguns, but I never owned a decent .22. Go figure.

Anyhow, I got a CZ 452 Lux for Christmas (my Dad rocks). After figuring out the 11mm dovetail for the Bushnell 3x9 and getting a trigger kit from Eric Brooks (1.75lb pull for $14 can't be beat) I headed out to the range.

Shot 5-6 just tooling around than then tried a group at 50 yards. Here's what came out with CCI Mini Mags. .401 with 5 shots.

Looks to be stringing a bit so I'm floating the barrel and glassing the lug. Second range report on the way......

I'm really impressed with CZ at this time.

Congratulations on the rifle. The more you shoot it, the more you will like it. I have a 452 heavy barrel in .22 and a 527 heavy in .223. I've owned a lot of guns over the years, but these two are my favorites, hands down.

I've got a 17 HMR American that I glassed and did the Brookie kit to. FANTASTIC! It shoots lllllittle bitty groups as a result.
And it looks a good as it shoots. CZ rocks!

Hi All,

I am just wondering why you are jumping to "Free Float" the barrel without trying other ammo in your new rifle? Although I do not have a CZ 452, I have the older Model 2 made in 1965 which didn't need a trigger kit as the trigger is crisp as glass.

Everyone seems to immediately jump to the conclussion that it needs a floated barrel if the rifle is bedded to the stock properly and the inletting done right then it won't need a floated barrel in most cases. Funny thing is that the real old time gunsmiths fitted the wood to the metal properly using real seasoned wood, the real good wood was air dried over time, the cheap stuff was Kiln dried. Now the good stuff is "Kiln dried" perhaps this is the problem? improperly seasoned wood moves over time possibly.

My CZ Model 2 has it's factory bedding and shoots just fine, OK it does not like some ammo like Winchester Lazer, in fact I have never found the hyper velocity ammunition to be as accurate as the std velocity stuff or the normal High Velocity come to that.

So try some different ammo and give it a while not one or two groups and jump to conclussions. I have a sporting rifle here made in 1908 and the bedding is still the same as it left the factory, I have even had it serviced by the factory just after I aquired it and they checked it against their recorcds and it's not been altered in any way. Some how I can't see a lot of the modern rifles reaching this feat

Oh, I tried several different types of ammo and ran several groups. CCI Mini Mags were the best. Standard velocity was not so good. Most through flyers high and they were all after the first shot. I don't think it was moisture as much as shifting the gun on the bags during rechambering. The stock was rubbing the barrel on the bottom of the channel on this gun. With that information, I don't think I'm jumping into anything.

I prefer to float all my barrels in regards to rifles. I live in Western PA. This gun WILL get wet someday. Unless a good wooden stock is sealed, it will shift some to moisture. Some rifles are not sensitive to this, but some are.

I've since bedded the lug and floated the barrel. It's been too cold here to shoot outside (IMHO) so I'll have to wait, but if results are poor I'll simply glass contact point and begin differing torque values. Eventually, I'll find what it likes.

Finding a rifle's abilities can be a process and I enjoy that process, not just the end result.

Congrats on the new rimfire!

I've got a virgin CZ 452 SuperBRNO 2500 (UltraLux) I purchased last year. Can't wait till spring to see what she's capable of.
From everything I've seen and heard ( nice shootin by the way ) I should be pleased.

Hi All,

Well I guess it nevers rains, nor is it damp with mist and fog here in England

I free Floated one rifle before I realised that it's not normally required, that rifle a Swedish Mauser sporting rifle shoots quite well, but I should have tried it out before floating the barrel . I did recently bed one rifle due to poor stocking at the factory, the rifle was new in the box by the makers are no longer in business otherwise I would have sent in back. I accidently put to much filler in and ended up with a floated barrel. Accuracy was dismal.

Later I redid the job making sure the barrel had pressure at the ressure point in the forend and re-stested the rifle. Accuracy is much improved with groups that I have shot with some S&B 196 Grn SPCE going into 1.171". The rifle is chambered for 7.92mm (8x57) Now I want to get to the range proper and try it some more with some handloads as well. With the floated barrel the group was a pattern covering the target at about 6" and that was at 100 yards
