Sight Question ?

As I learn about military sights,I get more questions.I have a P-14 with it's orginal sights, I think. Now I have just learned the front blade is aimed at 6:00. The next question, what size black circle and at how many yards? thx

I assume your askign about a target? use whatever you have readily available, as for range, if you can find a 100 yard range use it, if you can only get 25, you want to set the sights so that usign the 100 yards range marker, you hit 3 inches higher than where you are aiming, at 25 yards.

that is fairly standard for _most_ .30 cal rifles, and will give you a max point blank sighin of roughly 300 yards in an 8 inch circle.
That is assuming rifle is in good condition, and everything is working properly.

what that means is, set that way, aiming center of mass, the bullet will never go above or below that 8 inch circle, until sometime after roughly 320 yards or so.

8 inch cirlce is generally consiered to be the killzone on a deer, and is just a standerd rule of thumb.

Gumpokc gave you good advice. The P-14 sight you mentioned is (I assume) the "Battle Sight" since the ladder sight goes from 100 or 200 to about 1500 yards. The 6 O'clock hold on a bullseye is pretty standard with military rifles to have a definite aiming point as opposed to the "center hold" which is not too helpful when you have different sized bullseye targets.

Using the battle sight,you can use a B-8 target with a 6 inch bull or any sized bull you have, since you are aiming at 6 o'clock, the useful information is where does you gun "print" bullet holes on the target with that sight picture at 6 o'clock. Record the impacts and bullet type used. The battle sight is on point of aim/point of impact about 350 yards, so your 100 yard groups will probably be above point of aim.

Yes that's the sights.The rifle will shoot 2" groups. So the question becomes one of size of the military bullseye for the vertical. Then I will have an idea of the trajectory for regulating the handloads to use the ladder sight.This rifle will be hunted with.The fun part of military sights and handloading,it's both group size and POI.

I have tried Remington 180 RN with W-760 and Sierra 180 Prohunters with IMR-4064,both shoot well enough but with very different POI.

You folks got it right. I have a pair of P-14s made at the Eddystone Plant outside Philadelphia by Remington and like them. If you are looking for targets, the Speedwell folks have a fine website at www.speedwell-rockwood.com. We use the SR-1, SR-21 and MR-31 targets at 100 yards to shoot the National March Course.
