The Ruger is a very tough durable handgun. The Smith is easier to work on (take apart, trigger job, ect).
The 4" barrel is better for carry. Like Rocky, and Tater said. The 6-8" barrel is minimum for hunting. 2" does make a big difference in both range, power, and abit easier to shoot. It seems the GP-100 with a minimum 6" barrel, will fit your needs.
