Elk Hunting In Wyoming

Hello all. I am heading to Wyoming for an Elk hunt in the Grand Teton Range in Area 79. Can anyone offer suggestions as to defined areas in 79 that may offer up a chance for a nice bull. I would greatly appreciate any advice.

First off, I've never hunted the Teton Range, but I have hunted some places that probably offer terrian very close to that area.

Being your first hunt out there and from PA (much like myself), there's practically nothing around our area that can prepare you for what you are about to partake! You'll probably never want to leave.

If you haven't been hiking and walking daily, it may be a little late..but I'd get started. Walk the steepest hill you can find and then do it again and again. After about 50 times, you feel like it will of one day of hunting in the Mountains!

No really, just take your time climbing, getting up into elevations of 9,000 and above you'll definitly feel the difference in the "lack" of air.

As for the area your hunting? Well I've been through there many of times during Sept/October and seeing about a 1000 - 2000 head of elk in the wintering range around Jackson Hole really will get your blood boiling. There's plenty of elk in that area for sure....at least the last time I was there, I saw a lot.

I know we have some Jackson Hole, WY members on the board so maybe they can better help you with the area. In any rate, Good luck!

Thanks Petey for the help. I've been doing just as you've suggested with walking the steep hills, and pacing myself. I have downloaded so many pictures of the Grand Teton, and haven't found 1 yet that does not look like a hunter's paradise. I would like to hear from those hunters in Jackson Hole, WY who live and breathe it everyday. Thanks again for the reply...

I've hunted the general area a few times. I can't find my map that shows exactly where area 79 is so I'm not sure where you'll be. The bull I'm holding to the left was taken within sight of the Tetons to the NE. As a non-resident you'll be limited to the public land that you can hunt, unless you have a guide. The J.D.R. just south of Yellowstone holds some monsters, along with lots of grizzly bears and the meanest mess of timber you'll ever see. Very hard area to hunt, but it holds big bulls. Later in October you might be dealing with some migration, and then it's anybody's guess where they'll be. An area thick with elk if they're moving through. If they're not, then you might as well have an elephant tag. You'll have fun.

I was just looking at an old map, it appears that area 79 is around the south side of Pacific Creek. i've been there. Great resident elk herd but if you're a non-resident you'll need to go with an outfitter, I know a couple in that general area that have camps around Enos Lake & Moss Lake, and the Pacific Creek trailhead. Towards the North there are some burn areas from the '88 Yellowstone fires that the elk really like. It also gets some migrating elk out of Yellowstone in later October, but it's hit & miss. Big ones though.

Also, the place is crawling with grizzly bears. Good elk hunting though and you could easy see a moose or two.

Let me know if you have an outfitter in mind, I could maybe give you some pointers from firsthand experience.
