Scope Help

I just registered here. Great website. Anyway, I am looking at 2 scopes, and I need some advice. I am looking at a new Zeiss Conquest 3x9x50 for $514. Or I can buy a Leupold LPS 4x14x52 from a friend. He is selling the Leupold for $500. I now these are 2 different mags. but which one would you choose? I hunt both woods and fields. I am also buying a new rifle, either a Remmington 700 CDL 7 mag or a Ruger M77 7 mag. How much are the Rugers going for these days? If I can find a good deal, I'll buy the Ruger, but if not I'll buy the 700.

Thanks for anyhelp.

I cannot help you out on the scopes because the only ones I own are Burris scopes. However, regarding the rifle I only buy Rugers and have two of the Ruger 77 MKII's. One is a VT in .220 Swift and the other is a standard hunting rifle in .300 Win Mag. Both are stainless and I love both of them.

My next bolt action rifle will be another Ruger 77 MKIIVT in .25-06 and I am going to put a Burris Black Diamond scope on it. I am hoping to use that rifle for almost everything, but only time will tell if it will work out that way.

Well, from what you've described either scope would probably suffice, although I'd lean towards the Conquest. You don't need the extra power on a big game rifle, unless you'll be doing a lot of shooting at 300 yards and beyond. JMHO

A 4-14 would be good for antelope and varmints. A 3x9 better for woods and fields type deer hunting, IMO.
I think, based on owning a Zeiss Conquest 3-9x40, that you do NOT need a 50MM objective. The 40Mm Conquest will let you see well after legal shooting time. The 40Mm will be lighter, cheaper, more compact, and mount lower on the rifle- all good things.
So, I'd suggest you take a good look at the Conquest 3-9x40, and save some money. It is a superb scope.

Welcome to HC Gahunter -- I myself would probably be leaning toward the Zeiss Conquest, though both are good scopes. And I'd agree with Jack on the 3-9x40 unless you're going to be doing night hunting, then I'd get a better scope than either of those.

And, if I'm not mistaken, I think the LPS is a 30mm tube, which you won't need for normal day/deer hunting, jmho, Waidmannsheil, Dom.

No matter which you chose you should be happy. I own or have owned about every brand of rifle and they will all shoot. Some shoot better than others and some are smoother than others ect. Right now I`m convinced that CZ`s are the best on the market, but given your 2 choices I would go with the Ruger. Rem. rebarreled my .17 Rem. mod. 700 and it shoots like crap plus they screwed up my trigger while they had it so I po`ed at them, but I do think that the m-77 is better quality. As for scopes I`ve got abt. 30 Leupolds. I have other brands I get on trades but won`t buy anything else. I`ve owned 2 Burrius scopes and both were junk out of the box. A 3x9 scope is all you will need for any kind of big game hunting and unless you going to do some long range shooting on varments it will do there also. At present I have a fixed 12x on a .22-250 and a 2 1/2x7 on my .17AH, but the rest of my varment rifles wear 3x9 or 3 1/2x10 Leupolds. My stopping rifles and my muzzle loader wears 2 1/2x scopes. I`ve never owned a Zeiss but hear they are great glass but their warrent is not as good as Leupolds. As I said you can go to far wrong no matter what you deside.

I would go with the with the Remington Model 700 CDL it is a good rifle and I think Remingtons are just fine I shoot them all the time and that's all I own. I agree about getting the Ziess Conquest in the 3-9x40 it will be all you need and a good compliment to your 7mm Mag in the CDL.
