red dot for .44 mag revolver

I bought a Bushnell Trophy 1X30 red dot at Dick's. I brought it home and opened the box to find the contents without a top cover and put in wrong. I placed the batter in, (yes it's right side up,) and couldn't get a dot. Now I'm pissed. I called Dick's and they said to bring it back. It appears as though this was already brought back to them and resold. I hope it's not a tell tale sign of the scope quality. I'm pissed at Dick's, I have a forty minute ride with two tolls to bring the thing back!
