Thumbs up After my first coat

...of finish coating this old junker stock I decided I didn't like the glossy finish. As I write the finish is dulling a little in the open air. I'm wondering if some really fine steel wool would buff the shine out when I'm done with one more coat? 0000? What do you think? It doesn't appear to be"high gloss". Beatiful Cherry color. Iwas very pleased with how the wood came back to life. THNX

Yes, fine steel wool will knock the gloss down, but only do it after you've put all the coats of finish on, and they have time to dry thoroughly.
Otherwise, you'll get tiny steel bits from the wool in the finish.

I`d forget the steel wool and get some "rotten stone". I believe you can get it at paint and hooby stores. I had a smith give me mine when I talked to him on refinishing a rifle he had bedded for me. The Steel wool will leave small pieces in the finish and leave rust marks if you don`t get it all out. The rotten stone in a paste with a little mineral oil will dull the finish and wipe off easily.

Thumbs up

My coats are done. I won't be doinganuthing else until Wed. when the 48 hrs is up. I'll look into the
Rotten Stone. If the finish is all the way dry the steel woo'sl still a risk?

No the steel wool is fine. I have finishes a few gun stocks and more than my fair share of other wood projects and as long as the finish is good and dry you don't need to worry about it.
