zombie grouse?
After a fine season last year (for me anyway),this year sux.Grouse are hard to find.In between writing graduate research papers, Iv'e hunted a few times and only put up on bird.He flew straight up a cliff and I got him with my third shot ( )
I watched him fold up and go down hard on his back in a clump of rose bushes.Buddy went looking and I walked up to the rose bushes, waiting for Buddy to hand me my dead bird. Buddy went into the roses, out jumped the grouse (right in front of my feet!!!), who took off running and flapping. He went airborne and "hugged the leaves" and flew over the hill, never getting a foot off the ground.I missed him 3 more times and never did get that rascal up again. I've seen grouse do some wacky things, but I've never seen a grouse show signs of being dead and hit the ground so hard, only to spring back to life and get away! Hopefully I just nicked him and he's still alive. |

Please tell us where all of this transpired so we can circle the place on the map, as a place to avoid.

When I lived in the NE we would go out to hunt Pat-ridge in the spruce woods. As we did not have a dog, it was just a wee bit interesting. But we were young and broke most of the time, so it was fun. We certinly did not put the species in jepordy.
The grouse is a tough hombre. I always marvel at them breaking tree limbs as they fly off. I have never seen another bird fly through tree limbs like a grouse. Ed

Iv'e seen turkeys bust limbs, but the debris a grouse knocks out would lead you to believe he'd kill himself.
Oh well, next season's long time coming. This year I was made a fool of. Last edited by drummer; 03-28-2006 at 07:51 PM. |
