Question 45/70 recoil

I'm thinking of getting a larger bore barrel for my Contender and the 45/70 is at the top of the list. What is the recoil compared to a 30-06? I'm not a wimp, just trying to see what to expect. Thanks.

45-70

Tater...I have a 45-70 contender and can tell you it can shoot one hole groups..if you flinch the same way every time. That sucker kicks,,,no foolin. It really isn't a lot of fun to shoot after the 5th or 6th shot. But I am a wimp when it comes to recoil. You may make out just fine with it. Get the 14in Contender bbl though. Really tough on scope mounts too.

I've only fired one, my buddy's guide gun.

We were shooting our slug guns at our range and he pulled it out and we all took a turn with it.

I didn't think the recoil was as much as a 12 guage slug, and I think a 12 guage slug would be comparable to a .30-06. A 3" slug is considerably more.

If your comfortable with a .30-06 you'll have no trouble at all with it. If I remember right, the recoil pad was about as good as a piece of tire fastened to the stock. A better one would help.

The 45-70 with max loads and 4-500 grain bullets wil get your attention. Not much worse than a 454 casull in a revolver though, which is quite a bit more than .44 mag level, had a .308 barrel with a brake on an encore, it`s a bit more recoil than that, but never shot it without the brake. A handload of IMR trail boss and 405 lead bullets makes for a fun day of plinking, and then a hot load varget when you want more. Have you considered the .375 JDJ ?
