Skyline,
I wish my parents had decided to raise a family out in the mid west, but they were Italian immigrants with no money, so they had to go where they could find a job. On my dad's side, my grandfather and uncle and dad had construction experience, so they had to stay in the city where things were being built. I am a victim of circumstance. I am very attached to my family and my family is very attached to the city. Granted, my mom says that if I ever pick up and move to the country, my dad would either move out there with me or move in with me. We spent many weekends in what used to be the country in Pennsylvania. After we get a single family home, I am going to look real hard for an affordable farm somewhere within a 4 hour drive. Heck, I have been thinking about making my office mobile, which it pretty much is with the exception of all my files. I am debating whether or not I should buy an electronic document storage program where everything gets scanned in and backed up. My office would go paperless and I could take weeks off and stay on a farm. Hunt in the morning and evening and work during the day. Now that would be the life.

Good idea Fabs...you will need the sanity breaks as you get older, especially in your line of work. Ten or fifteen years from now when the glamour has worn thin and you are just counting the days until you can retire, your time on the farm will be the light at the end of the tunnel.
I was made the big decision to change things when I was 30. I looked ahead to another 25 years in the city, I had just gotten divorced, and I said no way.....I'm outta here. As I get older I can't seem to be remote enough. I much prefer my dogs and horses to most people and when I am forced to go to town I can't wait to get the hell out of there Now is a good time for guys in construction, carpentry etc to apply to work up here in Canada. There is a big shortage of skilled tradesmen up here and this is very true in the province I live in..........which also helps back guys for immigrating because they need the new people. |

I live in western Arkansas. Just about 45 minutes south of Ft. Smith.I just bought 25 acres of land with a 2225 sq.ft. log home on it for $58,000. The house needed work, but mostly work that I can do myself. Except for replacing some logs ( another $9,000). I have deer, turkey and black bear within walking distance. There are bargains out there, you just have to look!

Most people find themselves in the mindset, that during their working years they need to be where the money can be made, Fabs and his wife have spent a good deal of money time and effort in their education and for Fabs and his wife his area is where they need to be. I think Fabs also knows he is in a position to possibly plan out for his retirement maybe faster than some others...but all things are relative, I am in the middle of little Cuba here, but the economics are such that the money is to be made here while the gettin is good. And it will take more tomorrow to live than it did yesterday, but like I said some people's defintion of retirement and the "good life" varies as much as the amount of people here. My guy and I got into it the other night on this same subject...I want out and I want out now, he says it will take more money...so what are ya gonna do????

Don't let these guys scare ya off! ha ha I bought my land for around $700 an acre. It all depends on where you are and what's around you. Me, I'm out in the sticks and my house is definitly out of place, hence the low cost. I bought the land from an 80 yr old man that thought he was getting a steal since he hadn't purchased land in forever. He didn't advertise and it was a "through the grapevine" find. The timber alone is worth more than I paid for the property, so who ripped who on the deal?? Tons of cherry. Anyhow the disadvantage??
Well I probably couldn't get as much out of my house if I wanted to sell it than if it were "in town". Whoopie do-da. I'm not planning on selling and it's still appraises for almost 100K more than I have into it. That being said, there's property selling for 26,000 a 1/4 acre not more than 5 miles from my house. Some guy bought up 100 acres, timbered it to make his money, now he's lotting it off and selling it to "City folk" for a great deal. Sad part is they are buying it. Land is worth what you want to pay for it.... That property 5 miles away doesn't have anything special that mine doesn't. In fact, it's on a heck of grade, I'm sure no spring water (I have 3 springs on my property), and it's already timbered. Another nice thing is I signed a Gas/Oil lease about a year ago and am just waiting for them to drill. 8% profit on both and unlimited natural gas is hard to pass up for letting someone drill on my property. When you look to buy make sure you are getting what you are paying for. If you are using it to build then ask these questions: Is there water? If so, is it good. Is there sewage? (big thing in PA) If not what will it cost to put sewage in? Hookups already? What type of gas can you get to the location? Is there timber? What kind of Timber? and most important....will you have neighbors??? h aha The best part about where I live is that my neighbors can't ever get any closer than where they are and they'd need pretty good field glasses to see what I'm doing. Real Estate is huge money in these parts. I'm always looking for land to do two things. One....I want more land for the kids. Two, just what the other guy did. Lot it off and sell 1/4 acre lots to those Attornies in Metro D.C ![]()

GeeWhizz Petey,
The tax records show that the land at my place, 4.998 Acres ![]() Also there isn't enough water right to water all of it. My yard is 3/4 acre and expanding slowley and the water right is for 1/2 acre. The redeeming factors are the 200 yd shooting range, open elk and deer hunt, coyotes, ducks, geese, pheasants and hungarian quail, a river and diversion dam, all in the back yard. ![]()

Petey,
I'm not in the market for a 1/4 acre get away. If I buy anything, it will be 100+ acres and I will bring a cheap modular house there or buy a camper to trailer on my truck. However, before I buy land somewhere else, I am going to buy something here. I have been looking at a couple of lots that are close to 2 acres right by me and they want $375,000 for them. My wife and I looked at some new homes in a development and they wanted $765,000 starting for the biggest one, which was pretty nice, but it was on 6,000 sf of land. I could cut the grass with a weed whacker. Another issue I have is these damn Homeowners Associations. I just got a letter from the management company of my current HOA and they want me to pressure wash and stain my deck a natural color. First off, I think the management company is retarded because almost nobody stains a deck. Secondly, they didn't even say I have to weather proof it. Our HOA budget is $110,000 a year, and 10% of that goes to the management company to collect the monthly $66 fee and hire contractors to keep the place in order. Hell, I could do all that for $11,000 a year. I need to get a couple of HOA's as clients. Anyway, the first place I will be looking for land is the Eastern Shore of Maryland. After that, I will be looking along the Potomac River, then Virginia, and finally West Virginia. If I cannot find anything reasonable in those areas, then I will be looking in the South (i.e., the Carolinas, Georgia, Alabama, and maybe Florida so that my in-laws can visit while I am hunting).
