I have been fighting a severe sinus infection and finally broke down and went to the doctor. When I was sitting in the waiting room, I ran into a an old friend. She is married to another old high school friend of mine. She was in with her son and she told me that she was at the hospital the day before too. Her husband is a competitive Mt. bike racer. He was outside Sturgis riding in preparation for an upcoming 50 mile race. He was heading back to Sturgis coming down a very steep curvy paved grade. His speed was estimated between 40 and 50 miles an hour. On a bicycle! He came around a curve and hit a deer! He obviously took a hard spill. He broke his helmet up and ended up with quite a few stitches in his head. Now the crazy thing about it is the impact killed the deer. Now, what are the chances of that? I have'nt had a chance to talk to him yet. But his wife says he's doing great and laughing about the ordeal. Besides the stiches, I guess there nothing much wrong with him. But his wife says he's not going to make the race this weekend!

I talked with him the day after the incident and man is he banged up.
Took most of the hide off the lower left side back area and arm and the stitches in the head were nasty also.

Too much velocity for such a lightweight projectile.

My highest speed down hill on a road bike was 62. Dont have a problem getting into the high 30's on short down hills, and have hit 46 this summer while drafting a truck.

One guy I used to train with lost it on a decent down a mountain and ended up tearing the lower part of his jaw off his face. Those decents can be terrible, but they are what we look forward to as we are climbing the mountain and suffering.

Glad to hear that the guy is going to be okay. The silver lining in the cloud is that he now has a freezer full of venison.

This was on a paved road with cradual curves and he said he never saw it coming until the impact.

Here the town I live in, a friend of my family's had crossed the road to get his mail and was looking through it as he turned around and was hit by a bike coming down a hill. Apparently my friend was too busy looking through his mail and the rider had his head down and neither had a clue. The rider's helmet struck the man square in the face and broke every bone from his neck up while also causing minor, but permanent, brain damage. It has been about three years and he is resigned to the fact that he will never be right again. Luckily the rider only suffered minor injuries and is fine. I know this is a freak accident as far as the severity of injuries are concerned, but it serves as an example of the damage that a bicycle and rider can do at high speeds.

I guess this just goes to show the importance of paying attention to your surroundings.

At 50+ mph coming down a hill, it is rather tough to manuever, especially if you are trying to line up a turn at maximum speed. If something were to happen to me while making a turn on a decent, I would be SOL. I also never put my head down on a decent because there is way too much that can be in the road. Hitting a large pothole could be a disaster.

I hate to see these accidents occur, but as long as people ride bikes I guess there will be accidents. Same goes for cars, trucks, horses, planes, etc.

Didn't it kill the deer with one round? I say it did exactly what it should have.

Welcome to the board and great post. However, I think it is a lot better to use a bullet or arrow in lieu of a bike, car, or truck to kill a deer.

Nulle and Jonesy,

Next time you see this guy, ask him how much his bike cost? Just curious to see the amount of damage, other than bodily harm.

I'me not surprised it only took one round. After all, look what the recoil did to the hunter!

Further proof that a "brake" is not all that effective (in this case apparently because it wasn't used in a timely manner).
