My 4 year old son, woke up this morning and explained that he'd been thinking about hunting all night and that ,"he thought he'd come up with a good idea"
With Holloween right around the corner, I can see where his costume idea comes from. He explained that if I took him deer hunting this year that he would dress up like a deer and lay in the grass. Then, when other deers see him, they will want to make him their friend. When they come over to say hello (he grunts two times - which I guess translates into hello in deer language), then you can shoot that big old buck. So I'm sitting there blown away with the thought process of a 4-year-old, and wondering why in the heck I haven't thought about that before. Aren't kids great? Can't wait til he's my full time hunting buddy. One thing is so puzzling to him though, he just can't understand why I dress like a tree without any leaves. He always thinks I should add some leaves because everyone knows deer will recognize that I'm the only tree in the woods without leaves. Funny stuff. |

Out of the mouth of babes. Obviously, he doesn't understand that he might get shot himself in that process. To be young and innocent again.
Yep, some hunters have used deer decoys with some success. Kind of like hunting waterfowl or crows with decoys. Seems as though you have a pretty smart son there. Regarding the camo, some people use what is called a ghillie suit that has leaves hanging off it. I saw a guy still hunting with one of those on during gun season. I couldn't figure out how the bush was moving, so I brought my scope on it and finally saw the flourescent orange of the arrows on his rest. He was poaching, but I decided to let him go. It did take me a while to figure out it was a person.

Thats an awsome story!! I am glad yo shared that with us. makes me think of how smart kids are today and just where do they come upwith this stuff. I have a soon to be 5 year old girl and she cracks me up with some of the stuff she says. She has already asked me when i was going to buy her a gun so she can go hunting with me.

Del,
You girl sounds like me 29 years ago. I was supposed to go hunting with my dad one day after my morning kindergarten class just to tag along, but I had a fever and wasn't allowed to go, even though I really wanted to. My dad stayed home instead of going hunting. Maybe that is why he happens to be my best hunting partner. He cannot go this Saturday, our opening day for ducks, because he promised to help a farm owner pick grapes in the morning. So, I am going to help pick grapes too and maybe shoot some doves in the afternoon.

I have a 2-yr old granddaughter and I am anticipating our first shoot/hunt/fishing trip together. But, after reading a sad, sad story in the Waco, TX paper about a grandfather who accidentally shot and killed his granddaughter, I'm a bit skittish.
Seems they were riding around in the jeep and saw a feral hog. Grandpa rested his rifle over the jeep hood and didn't make sure of a clear line of fire to the pig. Bullet hit the towbar and ricocheted, killing his granddaughter. Got to be the saddest thing I've ever read or heard. |

I feel one of the most important things you can teach a kid is gun safety and not to fear the gun as much as respect the gun. A loaded gun in the hands of anyone who posts on this site does not scare me in the least because we have all been taught how to safely handle firearms and how to respect them. A loaded gun to me is a tool- all be it a very deadly tool that, when handled properly, should only be feared by deer, not people. Too many antigun people have never been taught how to handle guns and because of that, they fear guns. They have never shot guns, were taught to fear them and, to their way of thinking, no one should have guns. We know different and to us, the scarriest thing most of us can think of is someone breaking in our houses or threatening our loved ones and us NOT being able to have a gun to PROTECT ourselves and loved ones.

I took my 5 yr. old granddaughter squirrel hunting acouple weeks ago. She never shut her mouth, was on my lap in less than 5 min. and I`m sure every squirrel in the woods knew exactly where we were. We were only out about 45 min. but she had a good time, and so did grandpa.
