I Need Some Help On MUSKRATS
I've been trapping on some ponds at a ranch near my house, for muskrats, and I found a couple of underwater dens. On one den I could see a rut made through the mud, which I assume is the trail to the den, well I set a #120 conibear in the middle of the rut as near to the den as I could. I was wondering if it was better to set the trap near the den entrance or off aways up the rut. If I set the trap up the path a little will the muskrat go around it? I just set them this morning so I don't know if I got one yet. Also are cherry smelling lures good for muskrats?

You should have no problem catching rats on the bottom of the runs. They usually shoot downs these runs when leaving the dens.
On way I used to set deep water runs was to split a 1 1/4 inch sapling of the needed length about 16 inches up the heavy end. Slide the spring ring up the split and wire off the the end of the sapling. With the trap set you can push the sapling in the mud so the trap sets on the bottom of the run. In Michigan we used to have to be at least 6 foot from a den hole to set a trap. With this method I could set traps in the runs in 6 foot deep water with ease |
