Dan,
I am a Ruger collector, have been for 33 years. Please do not store any good gun in a rag oiled or otherwise. Cloth draws moisture. For long time storage, this is what I have done, and I just took some guns out of the safe that had been in storage, un-seen for over 20 years, without a mark on them. Get a large, thick, food storage plastic bag, remove the grips, put the gun in the plastic bag and spray the gun, in the bag, with G-96. Spray to oil and to remove the air. Roll the bag up around the gun, bottom to top, sealing the bag to the metal, forcing the air out. Put the bag and gun into a good gun rug, place the grips in the gun rug with the gun. Your gun can set like that for 20 years without rust. Moisture can not get to it through the plastic and the oil can not dissapear as it is held on the steel by the plastic. The gun will not develop moisture inside the plastic as it is bathed in and setting in oil. This is my long term storage program. If the G-96 dries up, it will leave a gummy protective brown film, remove it with what else, G-96. Spray it on, let it set a minute and wipe it off, clean as a whistle.
