Yard Sale finds for GOB

GOB,
I am ashamed to tell you that I did not find any more guns at yard sales this weekend.. Not even one! Well I did see one but it was about as ugly as one of those gals I dated one time only when I was drunk. Just needed to state...I quit drinking
Did pick up a bunch of brass at a yard sale though. Got about 1200 rounds of various rifle brass for 20 bucks. The best was some new 280 brass for the rifle I just got and 200 Rds of once fired 22 Hornet brass...oh and 600 large rifle primers by CCI for a dollar. Then I went into a store that was closing it's doors and bought some Federal large pistol primers for 1.00 a hundred as well as 6 boxes of rifle bullets for 10 bucks a box..including one box of Nosler Partitions(30 cal 180 gr). Another Sporting goods store that is gone ...but wow...the prices they had on stuff. Tough business!

Ain't no way in heck I'd start a Gun Shop or gunsmithing business. All the customers want to do is Byotc# cause the prices are to high or it takes too long to get a job done etc. ad Nauseum.

I was talking to one of the guys in our sporting goods store and he told me they made more money on tenny runners and sweat shirts than they do on a rifle.

as far as a gun shop goes, by the time you figure in rent, employee wages, benefits, buy stock it just ain't worth it. Your price has to be so high everybody jumps ship and goes to Wally world or buys on the net.

I think Rocky explained well in his post on this subject. Any Mom and Pop business is a PITA, especially for Mom and Pop.

I am in the midst of doing just that. Opening a shop again. Overhead is going to be slight cause I'm building a garage and turning the one I use now into my shop. If you don't mind making a reasonable profit on things it isn't hard to make money. When I had the place back east my biggest headache was the insurance costs for working on guns. I had to make 3000 bucks before I cleared a penny..but we do live in a litigious society. I may not work on guns again just for that reason. When I sold guns before I made way more on a used one than new. Competeing with Wally World isn't too hard. They don't take trades....I did. and gave serviece after the sale. Wally World employees give you that deer in the headlights stare when you ask a hard question ya know! I made 15% on large items like reloaders etc and much more on the little things..especially the ones ya can't get at WW. What is hurting now is the price of loading supplies etc. The spot price on lead on Friday was at 1.57 a pound...raw lead..not shot or bullets. Get ready to bend over soon.!!

Glad to hear you are getting back into it. At least where you are now you should get a REAL good response from the community.

I did do ok on a couple of items at the yard sales. I forgot to say I bought a new Dewey cleaning rod and a new Kleenbore rod for 4 dollars each. Those Dewey Rods are expensive. Lady even gave me the 4 new bronze brushes to go with 'em.. Like I clean the bores alot!? I have one of the Outers foul out cleaning systems for those ugly bored guns I get occassionally. Seem to work really well but ya still have to finish up with a rod and brush and patches. Hardly ever see gun cleaning stuff at yard sales
