finally getting my new rifle

I have the VX-III 4.5-14x50 LR with mildot reticle and put that scope on my 243 VLP. Its working well.
I prefer the 50mm obj lens scopes myself (the 40mm's look tiny on a varmint gun) and would recommend the Tactical Milling Reticle from Leupold. If you are going to shoot long range at all, that is the way to go. It has 1/2 mil hash marks and 1 mil marks which will allow you to hold-over/under at specific distances for fast shooting. Also helps for windage holds too.
My 6.5-20LR and 4.5-14LR with mildots are getting switched out by Leupold to the TMR which is what you could do later on if you don't have the cash to get it up front.
