shot a s&w 460, just bought a 500
well, been wanting one for years now, and finally bit the bullet so to speak.
so far, have not even fired the 500. i know i know, but i've got mild loads and some holy ---- loads. even though i havent fired it yet, it sure is fun to pull out and look at it, and the ammo. i have never been so content with a weapon without even firing it. the 460 was a blast however. yes, plenty of recoil, but manageable and fun. i will give further postings. btw i got a s&w model 500 7.5" barrel from the performance center. the 460 i shot was the exact same gun i mean fun, and i don't expect too much difference until i shoot the heavier grains. definately not something to take lightly though.!!! after the mall shootings in omaha, i think i will be using my concealed carry permit a little more. at least thats how i justified the purchase to my wife!!! that one hit a little close to home as i go to omaha quite often, my brother in law's sister was at von maur just 40 minutes earlier. happy holidays to all. jj |

THE S&W 500 is a handful for sure, but nowhere near as bad as you would think it would be.
I do have one word of advice though, wear gloves. The recoil, though heavy is manageable, but the checkering on the grips (plastic, rubber or wood doesn't matter) can dig into your hand. |

I`m sure that when your packing and you pull out that 500 that people will take notice.
I don`t know why everyone thinks thw 500 S&W is so bad. When I got my first one, the production model, I put 45 rounds through it from a bench. For those of you that haven`t tried you get abt. 3 time the recoil that way. I also have a video clip of a little girl that doesn`t weight 110 lbs. soaking wet shooting that gun. She fired it twice with 440 gn. bullets that were loaded to the max. It was taken the first day she ever shot a handgun. I let her start small though, with a 629 S&W, and she worked her way up. I`ve had alot of fun with that clip. When these big guys are afraid to shoot it I show them the clip.

fired the 500 today
went to the range and put 15 rounds thru the 500, some free hand, some off the bench. it is a very fun handgun, yes of course their is recoil but very manageable and definitely nothing to be afraid of.
i am not sure why some articles i've read from people who are experienced handgunners say that it is "brutal", and "not something i want to shoot again anytime soon", because it is just not that bad. would i want to shoot it all day long.......well probly not, but i never shoot anything all day long. i even got lucky with open sites on my first try and hit the 6" plate at 200 yards with kentucky windage. was not able to hit it again in six tries. i will say this though, i got excited and did not wear my ear protection on the first shot........wow, my eardrums still ache from that one shot. i am looking forward to practicing and making this a 150 yard deer gun. i plan to scope it soon. |

Almost snagged a 460 at cabela's but decided to wait. That round could be an awesome groundhog flipper at 200 yards...

460 or 500
i did have a hard time deciding between the two. two reasons for 460 uses 45 and 454, and a litttle flatter shooting.
but, i don't want a 454 or a 45 colt, so that eliminated that. they now are making more loads for the 500 that are quite fast and flat shooting 300 gr bulletts so just not that much different. also, i wanted the most powerful production handgun in the world, not the fastest. he he. |

Sorry
But they do make a 45-70 hand cannon. I think
it would by pass the 500 any day. steve |

There ain`t much difference. According to my Sierria manual the fastest you can push a 300 gn. bullet in a .45-70 with a 22 in barrel is 2150 fps. I don`t have data for the .500 with a 300 gn. bullet, but it will push a 275 gn. bullet to 2137 fps., or a 325 gn. bullet to 2002 fps. from a 10 in revolver. That would definately mean the .500 was harder hitting. The reason is that it has a higher working presure than the .45-70.
