Rifled Lead slugs?
Aight I know I know. The rifling is supposedly useless and it is the foster hollow base that makes it accurate. Having shot more than a few OLD lead slugs that were just that a hunk of non-rifled non-hollow base lead in the shell I can certainly tell the difference in accuracy on them. But heres the question. What range do you limit yourself to with a rifled lead slug? With my mosseberg 12 gauge pump with its fixed cylinder choke I can nail a 8" swinging steel plate at 75 yards every time I pull the trigger. And thats with open sites. I have just never taken a shot at more than about 50 or 60 yards with my single shot 20 gauge with its fixed modified choke.
What yardage would you limit yourself to with rifled lead slugs in a smoothbore? GoodOlBoy

Out of my 870 smoothbore I stayed within 50-60 yards, and I've had consistent deer hunting success with the 2.75" Remington Sluggers.
Last year I bought a 12-ga. Ultra Slug Hunter, however, and was reaching out to 100 yards fairly accurately with Lightfields, though I haven't hunted with it yet. I'll want to try different slug brands/loads and become more proficient with it before trying it on deer this winter.

I haven't used the rifled slugs for hunting because I have always had a fully rifled barrel and used sabots.
However, your limits should be based upon the accuracy of the load. If you can hit that 8" plate all the time at 1,000 yards, then go for it. Probably cannot be done, but if you could do it CONSISTENTLY, then it would be fine with me. Once you know what the limits are in a non-hunting situation, then you will know what the limits are in a hunting situation.

The mossy aint no good for squirrel. I typically head out for the first few hours of light and wait to get a deer, if it doesn't pan out then I start squirrel hunting.

I have never personally taken a deer in excess of 80 yards with a "rifled" slug, but I know people who consistently do so at ranges up to an slightly over 100 yards. The limiting factor is the gun's inherent accuracy with these loads. I have a friend who has shot several nice bucks over 100 yards with an Ithaca Deerslayer and rifled slugs - with open sights. He feels confident with his equipment, and it works for him. Stay within the constraints of your ability, and the ability of your equipment, and you'll be fine. gd

I shot a half rack with 4 point in 98 with pumpkin balls at 115 paces the first two shots i did not think i hit him he was standing broad side to me when he turned to run i shot it in the back of the kneck.
When i got to inspeting him later i found i did hit him and retreaved the 2 slugs in the muscle far sie of the chest. They are the size of a silver doller and it is what got me to youse the winchester partician golds. They just aint ment for them ranges it is what convinced me to change rounds. When i know my shots will be well under 100 yards i will youse them Thay are brick freight trains. I youse 3 typs of rounds sabots pumpkn balls and buck shot if yoused in the right way they are all great tolls and i have killed deer with them all.

Your abilities is the correct answere. Mass is SG only. I only managed to get 70-80 yds accurately but shot a 7pt at about 125 yds. Figured it was luck and stupidity.
Rifled barrel and and sabots are the way to go. Get decent groups out to 125-140 with a scoped 11-87. Good enough for me.

I know a rifled barrel and sabots work wonders. It still doesn't allow me to carry a modified choke squirrel hunting and then shoot a hog or buck if it is stupid enough to cross my path while I am doing it (So far at least one has been that stupid every year)
