get a good grasp on ballistics and spend 3 grand, its not that hard, but boy is it fun!

LOL! I don't think the $3,000 is all payable up front. You definitely need the good grasp of ballistics but then you just keep spending money to get the next thing, then the next, then the next and before you know it, you'll need to buy a new truck to haul all of the equipment you just bought.

Fun is an understatement. There's nothing quite like it. I've been lucky enough to hunt and take deer a lot of different ways but long range hunting takes it to a different level. Those who scoff at it simply have no clue of how much it takes and how much you get back.

Your right big, there is nothing I've ever experienced like that 1.6 second wait between the bang and the wh-omp of the bullet impact at 1K+. normal folks would not believe how loud that sound is.
and having witnesses is awesome as well, the look on they're face when they see it, but best of all is when ya help someone else, they whack a deer at an insane range, and ya see the fever infect them. They get the "deer in the headlights" look, then start grinning, and you know what they're feeling!

I brought out 2 newbies this year who never heard of such a thing, let alone witness it or do it. Both are now talking about it all the time and said it was "the best thing they ever did!"

Shooting is fun, but sometimes I enjoy being the spotter even more. Nothing like watching that bullet trace all the way to impact. No muzzle break on my gun, so if its less than 700 yards, I'm out of luck seeing a bullet impact.

Taking newbies is always a hoot! I can still see Mike Gallup's face when he killed his first deer at long range. When we first got there, he looked at the mountain in disbelief. Sort of like "what in the world are we doing here". 20 minutes later he had taken a deer on that mountain as was grinning from ear to ear. Another kid that we took a couple of years ago was the same way. It's really fun to see their reaction when you find a deer, walk them through the steps and then have them be the trigger man.

Most don't realize how long it takes for a bullet to travel that far either. When you're used to shooting at 100 or even 200 yards, it's easy to get used to the instantaneous bullet impact. Like petey says, when it stretches out there, you can recover from the recoil and watch you own bullet hit. Pretty neat...

In my big'ole 7mm AM, I've never shot a deer that I didn't see the impact in the scope.
Took 2 more new guys out this year, they both connected at 575 yards, and man were they pumped.
During a cold beverage after the hunt, they agrre'd that after seeing my rifles and my method and knowing a few of the guys who witnessed the 1350 yard shot that I made, that the sense of confidance I have in my rifles would have to be an incredible feeling.
one went back to ky with a video of a 575 yard impact on a whitetail, and said I'm tellin everybody who will listen in the state of ky. about this $hit!

i shot a dog at 600 and the guy with me was amazed. actualy i was to it was 220swift dropn like a ton of bricks out that far.

very cool indeed going that long. 3grand practice balistics and brains. plus being able to shoot semi straight. 3grand wont get you anywhere if you dont back it up

ohhhhh and who won the game anyways. found out who was playn sunday.

I'm afarid to get into the long range shoot. Would never shoot anything that far only because that would would bring on a whole lot of hurt on the domestic front. New Rifle, Scope, and whatever. Its pretty cool anyway.

I 2nd VaRedneck's comments. I thought I was a good shot because I could shoot a whitetail out to 300 yrds. Definitely have something to work on now!!! :0)

Being able to shoot a whitetail out to 300 yards is nothing to scoff at! That's good shooting anywhere. Considering the type of hunting the majority of people do with an "out of the box" rifle with factory ammo, etc. It's quite an accomplishment to be able to make that shot. One thing that everyone needs to understand is the amount of time and effort that goes into hunting this way. Everything has to be right and you can't wait until the day before season to shoot your gun off the truck hood and be able to do it. BUT, anyone who is willing to put in the time, invest in the proper equipment, and fine tune everything can do this.

We started out just trying to stretch out our varmint hunting kills and ran a lot of rounds down barrels prior to hunting deer. I will tell you this though, a deer is a might bigger target than a ground hog at the same distance. Shooting small targets gives you unbelievable confidence in being able to make the shot on a deer. If you're ever out this way, let us know we're always looking for a new hunting partner.

I second big bro's statement, cause I'll tell ya this, RR ain't no rocket scientist. took me alot of years to figure out how to do this. because I simply didn't know what was available to do it with, and there wasn't any local info about it until "the net".Now, 300 is the same as 600, is the same as 800, is the same as 1K, only difference is how many MOA's ya go up.
Don't get me wrong over 1K is a long ways out there, but 12 years ago 500 was harder.
