What is a fair price?
I have a Mossberg SSI-one in 22-250. Heavy barrel. It shoots well, but has an awful heavy trigger pull. Therefore, I dropped it off at a Gunsmiths that has done work for me in the past. Since this rifle has a bad trigger reputation, I am wondering how much $$ the Gunsmith will charge for a trigger job. Any one have any prior knowledge on this? What would be a fair price?
Thanks in advance. Karl |

Wow
Since you already dropped it off I guess you are gonna have to pay the freight whatever he says. . You should always get a close idea of the cost of a trigger(or any other woork)job that you are going to have done. Hope you get a good job. Trigger work is not an easy or usually cheap thing to have done. My approximation would be 50-75 dollars should cover the job though....unless it is a really time consuming job. They are kinda neat guns though...I sold a couple back yonder in time. Most shot pretty good.

Thanks for the reply. If I "get away" with $75.00 and it is a decent job, I will be more than satisfied.
You are right that I should have gotten an estimate first. I usually do, but not this time. Thanks again. Karl |

Mosdt trigger jobs that I have had done were in the $65 range, but those were for bolt action rifles. Your rifle, IIRC is not a common gun so the tariff just might be some what higher, especially if the gunsmith has never worked on one of that type.

Karl,
I suggest you should have negotiated a PRICE with the gunsmith BEFORE you dropped off the gun. WHATEVER folks say here on the Internet is not BINDING on the gunsmith doing your work. You should have discussed the cost of the trigger job with the gunsmith and be done with it. HE ALONE can TELL you IF you would will get a FAIR PRICE! Is this your FIRST gunsmithing job? I suggest you negoitiate with the gunsmith involved and get the ONLY real answer! Duh. Adam

Yep, I hate not knowing what the price is on anything. However, the gunsmith is pretty much as much to blame as you are Karl. The gunsmith shouldn't let you leave the shop without telling you how much it would cost. There is nothing worse than having a customer get bent out of shape over the price after the work is done. It usually doesn't make for a lasting relationship.

I guess location plays a roll, but should easily come in under $75.

90% of the problems that occur between retail business and the retail customer stem from lack of communication. This is a classic.

Hello Karl,
I agree with the $75.00 or under figure.... however, if it should be causing stress pick up the phone and give him a call, I am sure he will be glad to give you a ball park figure. BTW I am new to your wonderful forum and can't wait to "lurk" on more of the sites. Take care and God bless. cordell |

It depends
A competent gunsmith can probably quote a range of prices to do a job. It depends what the 'smith runs into and how long it takes to complete the task. Regarding the price, you will find out when you go to pick up the gun. Take care...
