30-30 cast bullet revisited.
Guys I am still thinking this through very hard about the cast bullet in my 30-30 and here is where I am at. I shoot laser cast it just about everything I reload. I am really thinking about just going with their 165gr cast bullet, problem is I can't find them anywhere BUT lasercast. I can find their 170 grain all over the place, but not the 165gr. I know it won't be moving more than 1100+- fps as a 165, I may just have to buy the 170s. The only reason I don't want to buy them directly from laser cast is that the cost per 500 is almost $10 higher directly from them.
I tried to get the 140grain ordered from beartooth (although at $22 per 100 they are a little high), but the guy doesn't answer emai, and doesn't anser his phone. Don't know that I just wanna ship money off to somebody like that. Anyway just pondering. I have brass prepped, powder and primer bought, just gotta figure out where I am ordering lead from. After doing some looking around on all the commercial caster sites that make 165 to 170 gr. 30 cal. bullets,Laser cast really has the best price for the bullet you get. There price includes the shipping and handling and the few others that I found by the time you add that it cost a few dollars more per 500 bullets.
A good thing about the laser cast is you can apply a gas check to there bullets if you want to push it faster, all the others don't offer that option and are .01 undersized as opposed to the laser cast. If you haven't shot the laser cast in the 30-30 in the past send them an email and request some sample of what you want to try,you can also get reloading data from them with there bullets. |

The best way to get what you want is cast them yourself. you can go with Lee basic stuff nd their molds although I prefer Lyman and RCBS molds as they hold up a lot better. Lee molds make decent bullets but I have several and I feel they're a mite fragile. The two bullets I like best are the Lyman #311291 and the RCBS #30-180-FN. The Lyman bullet runs right about 175 gr. in wheel weight metal (WW) and is a decent deer slayer if you want to try hunting with a cast bullet. The RCBS bullet weight right at 190 gr. in WW metal. I've taken 15 deer with the Lyman and two deer with the RCBS bullet. Lyman also makes a 175 gr. bullet #31141 or #311041 using the newer catalog number. It's not all that hard to come very close to factory ammo velocity for serious hunting. Size your bullets to .310" and accuracy should be just fine.
To give you more data for incentive would require me to literally write a short book, Just pick up a Lyman cast bullet manual and give it a study. Right now, I'm trying to develope a load for a stubborn Mauser I have that was rebarreled to the .358 Win. Once I get it giving me what I want out of a load, I'll be taking the gun on a feral hog hunt. That looks like it will be a fun deal. Paul B. |

I already hunt with cast bullets using my 45lc model 92, and my H&R handi-rifle in 45-70. Just adding 30-30 to the line. Thanks for the info guys.
