Another "Old Army Rifle."

Today I found another such arm, but due to failure to respond to my Tokarev M40 post, I will let youse guys skip this chapter and MAKE IT a MYSTERY!

You guessed correctly with "B", European. I had to go to town for groceries and arranged to see an "Army Rifle for $75.00." It was a lovely (Very Good +) Model 1938 Mosin Nagant 7.62 X 54MMR Short Rifle. It was VG in and out, but had no sling loops, but was a very nice matching piece.

It shoots to the sights with 148 grain ball ammo. I water cleaned the bore and have a nice Short Rifle to go along with the two horses in the barn here at the farm.

This is the last thread I shall ever open on this site. I will respond to other posts, BUT shall never again open a thread here. Be well, my friends.

Keep opening the threads with your new (old) purchases. I may never respond to them, but I read every one.

I don't get a chance to see many old military arms around here except for what I have in my gun cabinet.

I would for one love to see pictures of these rifles you find Adam.

It would be worth it just to listen to you in person about your knowledge of old arms.

Many thanks for the vote of support. We have a digital camera and this latest printer has a Scanner gizmo AND LOTs of reading material. Once I get it all together, I will gladly post pictures.

Maybe sometime you could chat here about Military/Surplus arms in your part of Canada. Are there few or many to select from? What is available and what are your restrictions about purchase and storage requirements. I think many USA members need to know how restrictive the rules of gun ownership can become.

I son't know much about the old mil surp around.. I see a few at the local gun show. Most of I see is the typical .303 brit Lee Enfileds, and the odd P14.

As for owning a gun here, a bit of a PIA. You have to take seperate training courses (or you can challenge the tests) for both long guns & restricted firearms (eg, hand guns, AR-15 style rifles, and similar firearms.) Full autos, handguns with barrels less than 4" or calibers less than .32 cal (except for rim fires) we cannot own.

Now for storage. All long guns must be stored without the bolt, or trigger locked, or in a locked cabinet. Ammo must be stored & locked seperate from the guns. Handguns or restricted firearms must be trigger locked & stored in a locked cabinet or case. We can only shoot restricted firearms at an approved range, not even our own back yard if we live in the country.

All firearms must be registered. Right now the current gov't is trying to remove the requirement to have long guns registered, and hopefully that will happen.

toxic111, You have my sympathy for the exercises you must endure in order to have firearms. I need clarification on the restricted firearms. Are handguns with barrels of 4" or longer NOT restricted? I can understand the full auto, but handguns with barrels of less than 4" would mean I could only shoot my S&W Model 60 with a 3" barrel on a range.
It is my constant companion, unless I feel the need for something with more horsepower.

I just started an interest in older military rifles. Usually I was just looking for things to sporterize, in fact I still do.

Although I do appreciate the firearms, I will probably never use one for the range for two reasons, one: I truly am pathetic with open sights, my eyes are not up to the task. Two:I do not reload, and getting the ammo for the Russian and other old communist block weapons, is expensive for the quality of what you buy.

But I am still 'on the bubble' for getting a British .303 But I haven't the knowledge or correct tools to check the barrel’s condition. But I do like the feel of a basic Enfield.

But just FYI, Timney Triggers produces for the Mosin Nagant now.

All handguns are restricted in Canada. Handguns with barrels less than 4" are prohibited, and we can't own them. It does suck. I do own 2 handguns, but to enjoy them I am off to my local range.
