Considering a red dot sight
Been toying with the idea of putting a red dot sight on my AR. Have been diligently reading reviews. Seem to be mixed reviews especially on halo's under $200. Don't really want to put a tube type on the rifle would prefer the open type. Currently have a 3-9x40 on flattop. Thinking of putting the red dot on a angled rail mount for tactical scenarios Don't want to spend more than a couple hundred. Would possibly use it also on shotgun.
Wondering what your experiences have been and what you recommend. God created we manage. |

Red Dots on ARs
I have a big ol tube type(in fact a Trashco Pro Point) on my Bushmaster Varminter for called yotes. It works great. Good on runners out to 150 yds if I do my part. It's on QDs and so is the 6x18 Nikon I keep around just in case. They are repeatable. It is a very accurate .223 rifle.

Not dissing anybody here..far from it..but I seem to have an issue with the tactical craze nowdays. The only real tactical needs are really only generated in the Military and police situations. What the heck are all these people getting tactical shotguns rifles and yes even tactical handguns for?? I guess I am a little underwhelmed by all this stuff. Do they actually go out and play tactical situations etc. H3LL I have a problem with the police doing raids with masks etc on..What the H are they afraid of with showing their faces and we have people getting all hepped up on getting tactical gear??..Hey if they wanna start a Rebolution..let me know too..
And yeah BH..Red Dots are really useable mostly in up close and personal situations..like shootin called coyotes. Scopes for the longer stuff. If I gotta get in a Up Close and Personal with a Person...I hope I'm more'n a hundred yds away...and that may just be too close. Shotguns at 20 yds is called dangerous ridiculous and of course Stupid

Skeet,
not dissing anybody here. The only thing tactical I own is a high cap handgun. And the only reason I own it is because the state cannot deny my "right" to own a high cap pistol if I already own one. Other than that it's pretty generic for me. The republic I live in has licenses for non hi cap and hi cap magizines. Then in Boston if you get caught with a hi cap mag whether your are licensed or not for it you going to do time. Brillant. I figure the bg will fall to a BAR as quick as a AR. |

Hey BH..Wasn't puttin nothin on ya..Realizing you live in Taxachussetts..Peoples Republic of... I know y'all have some weird laws. Heck I was just told that Maryland is somehow or someway gonna ban the sale of Green Military metal ammo cans..Dangerouse thngs that they are. Don't know if'n it is true but if those misguided politicians back in my home state did such a thing..they should all be impeached for accepting money under false pretenses....Like representing the PEOPLE. I think you may have had a few issues of such things foisted on the PEOPLE by your legislators.. Heck I got stopped by an officer of the law in New Jersey once...because I had an empty gun rack in my back window. Can't carry a gun in the back window in NJ...but it WAS empty. Took him to see his Sergeant..well he did follow me to his barracks...and got that one straightened out Why do people who want to assert their authority so strongly always seem to be so stupid???..How'd they get through the background check and psych profile?? Somebody said it once on here..and I truly believe it..more'n half the police officers would support an illegal order to disarm the people of this country..Just to assert THEIR authority

Red Dots
Read my first post on the issue. There is a time an place for them..you have to figure if the times and places are going to work in your favor. Military wouldn't use 'em unless they worked...well most of the time that is true..just not with the 9mm Handgun LOL About the time or place yo need the other type of sight is when ya won't have it. Personally I have no use for holo sights

I put a red dot on my Ruger .22 Standard auto and really like it. I didn't realize just how well these things would allow you to shoot. It's great for squirrel hunting, particularly in relatively low light situations. A lot of the guys at my shooting club have mounted them on rifles and all I have spoken with really love them. The only problem is you need to be careful to turn off the dot when you are finished shooting. Leaving it on will run the battery down fairly quickly and replacements are pricey and sometimes hard to find.

All 5 of my Red Dots use a very common button cell battery..but you are right..they ain't cheap and they sure do run out quick. I really like the on off switches on the laser sights..but the lasers aren't very useable except in low light situations. Be neat if'n we could put a switch like that on a red dot

Is this a SHTF carbine type of AR?
If so, you want a top-notch optic and won't get it for a couple of hundred dollars. Also make sure to have good back-up iron sights and that they are zeroed. Look at the Aimpoint Comp M2 or M3-series sight and LaRue cantilever mount. http://stores.homestead.com/Laruetac...tail.bok?no=18 http://stores.homestead.com/Laruetac...tail.bok?no=19 Batteries will last a long long time, approx 50,000 hours or more. You don't have to turn it off. I have an early Comp M mounted on a Ruger Mk3 22 pistol. While it may be a bit heavy for that application it works very well. Allen
