Joe Boleo,

I like the P-17 very much and have several Remmys, Winchesters and Eddys on establishment. BUT, the committee that refitted the P-14 to the P-17 were not shooters! I think you will be disappointed using your P-17 in DCM matches. The fault of the P-17 is the same one that haunted the British Mark III. In 1916 the Mark III became the MkIII*. They dropped the Magazine cutoff (a very good thing) and the Windage Adjustable Rear Sight (A very bad thing).

The Fine P-17 does not have a Windage Adjustable rear sight as does the M1903 Springfield and the M1892 Krag and the M1884 Trapdoor Springfield. Windage adjustment (?) is a hammer job on the front sight, left or right, and staking same. Best of luck making windage adjustments at your DCM Matches.

The P-17 is a lost cause for match shooting, in my opinion. Better go with the Garand with click adjustable rear sight. For $2.00 more, the P-17 could have been windage adjustable when the rifle cost the Gummint $26.00. Go figure?

Adam

It depends what you prefer

A number of shooters use vintage bolt action military rifles at our monthly DCM matches. The number of U.S. Model of 1917 rifles on the line continues to increase. True, there is no easy windage adjustment. Once sighted in, that seems to be just fine for 100 yard targets. At longer ranges it might be a different story. These folks are just having fun. They are not bench rest shooters. So it depends. All the best...
