Dan,
The problem with the money and the pre 64 Win action is that Win came out with the Classic and the Safari models that are controlled feed. So, you can buy a new Win Pre 64 style action in a brand new gun for under $1,300. To build a custom Pre 64 you are looking at about 1,000 to 1,200 just in parts plus shop time. The last Pre 64 action (30-06) I bought cost me $400. The last custom Pre 64 gun I bought cost me $800 and I sold it in April for $800. I bought it because it was less than the parts and I got the original barrel and original stock in the deal. It gets down to who built the gun, how nice it is (looks, shoots, etc.) and wheather you want that particular gun. Ed

This was a auction, it wound up going for $1600+......I bailed out at $500.....

Heres the Rub
The pre '64 actions are at a commodity these days, they had a big reputation at the be all of end all actions. A lot of them were very accurate and the controlled round feed was the bees knees back then.
What the pre '64 believers will not tell you is that all of those actions were hand fitted back then. They were not consistent in quality or the metallurgy of the materials. They will also not tell you that the post '64 actions were of better quality and a whole lot more accurate. That's not to say that the pre '64 actions were not accurate because SOME of them were extremely accurate, its just that the accuracy was not consistent through out the entire series. The only reason that Winchester went back to the controlled round feed is that a lot of the customers were raising cane for it for ever and a day to get it back. It was then the the controlled round feed came back in the Winchester line. And then a lot of the new control round feed actions were a variation of/or a combination of a control round feed and a push round feed. For someone who only believes in the pre '64 action there is nothing better. But there are other manufactures out there that make control round feed actions that are not only better made there quality is better and they are consistently more accurate. These days you can buy a brand new rifle that will do anything that the pre '64 actions will or could do and do it a whole lot better and at a better price. But its like anything else. If its something that you want and the price for it is worth it to you, then by all means indulge yourself if thats what you want. Bulletpusher

LOL. BP, I've got 2 safes of the pre 64's..............this un just wasn't worth any where that to me!!!
Dan I got to foldle one of the renewed M70's at a sports show a few weeks ago........to me, I did not fell 'right' I'll stay with the old uns.

Don't get me wrong
Dan,
I like a control round feed as much as anyone can, I've shot the tightest groups that I've ever shot out of a sporter weight rifle from a rifle with control round feed. You know that you don't have that little spring loaded button in the bolt face to push the cartridge sideways in the chamber, etc.etc. That rifle was a M77 MKII Ruger chambered in .25-06. I unfortunately had to sale that rifle for reasons I will not go into at this time. The tightest group that rifle ever shot for me was a 0.118" c/c with is kinda tight by any body's standards. I've seen some pre '64 Winchesters that were to die for as for looks and capability. But that Ruger would do anything any one of those Winchesters would do and more, baring caliber chose for the proper hunting situation, i.e. dangerous game. Right now I'm just getting started working on setup and load testing for a push feed action Savage that I've had for a year or two at this point. This is the second Savage rifle that I've had the privilege to own and I love it. Bulletpusher

Dan,
A few years ago I got my first Pre-64 Model 70 rifle in .30-06 with a Kollmorgan Scope. My rifle was made in 1939 and shoots my handloads very well. You are fortunate to have vaults full of pre-64s. If I ever get another, I think I would like a .375 just to test the cement bonds on my plastic teeth! LOL. Adam

Adam, I started collecting these things 30 years ago.......before the prices went up!
Other guns are also in safes...M70's total 11. Have several duplicates.........if I get one offered n the denero is right....I'll buy it.... Dan Had 10 more....when kids moved out, I blessed them with 5 each! When the old goat sees the white buffalo, they already have a list of who gets what...
