Special place

WE will be making our yearly visit to Gettysburg Pa Tomorrow with the Wife and Boys. Ive been to Gettysburg many many times, but I just never get tired of the place. For me it's like going back in time , my Wife loves it too. There is always something new to see or do, I'm like a kid in a candy store. This year we are going to try horseback riding and do a lot of shopping at the souvenir stores, we will also be looking for places that we would like to live in that area

what are some of the special places some of you have?

Know what you are talking about Adam. My Civil War Battle Ground that I keep returning to is Vicksburg. Just something about it that keeps bringing me back.

We've been to Gettysburg a few times; while I think I would always enjoy going there, my wife doesn't.....

Fortunately, I have family that lives fairly close by in Maryland.

I've done the horseback ride thing in the past....kinda cool, but don't expect to be doin' any cavalry charges or anything like that; you aren't going to go faster than a walk. Still, you get a different perspective, and IIRC you will go just north of little round top/devil's den, right by the barn where General Sickles was wounded (you can still see cannon ball holes in the barn), through the peach orchard, to where Pickett's charge started, and then back again.

One of my special places is Fort Michilmackinac, at the straits between the U.P and L.P. in Michigan. Started as a trading center by the French in the 1600's, it was later built into a fort. After the F&I war, the fort became a possesion of the English, and was later lost to Pontiac's forces during Pontiac's rebellion in 1763. The British later moved the fort to a nearby island (Mackinaw Island), but the history there can't be stamped out.
I was a boy of 10 when I first saw it, and try to get back as often as I can. As a kid, I was more into history and science (yes, I was a nerd) than baseball and sports, and fell in love with the place.

First of all I love Gettysburg but man do I get a errie feeling when there. Its one of those place you were in another life. I do go as often as I can. Shilo is nest on my list. Did Franklin this year.

I guess I was a nerd too, because History was my thing not sports.

Shilo is also on my list and I haven't been to Franklin. Have you been to Antietam? That is an awesome battle field park also, it doesn't look much different than it did back in 1862. They've done a nice job keeping it out of Developers hands.

JR no I have been to Antietam but that gonna happen some day also. I really cannot understand how interested in this period of time. Being a transplant midwestner the Civil Ware was not a big thing.

On 9/11/11 at 6:00 p.m. lightning struck the phone line in front of the house. My old computer got fried. This new one arrived an hour ago.
