What will you give me for this old Army gun?
My Welfare Reciepient UNEMPLOYED Neighbor makes a living off buying rental unit goods at auction. Last Saturday he came to my home and asked me if I wanted an "Old Army Gun" he got from a storage unit auction.
I looked at a Model 38 Swedish 6.5X55MM short rifle. The numbers matched and the bore was "bright." I told my neighbor that all I had was $55 cash in pocket and a case of beer (cold) in the barn refrigerator. He said, "Ok, a done deal." The Swede is like all Swedes I ever saw, BEAUTIFUL. I cleaned the bore and then ran some ammo up the tube. I now have a lovely stalking rifle for PA bear season with 156 grain RN reloads and then for deer with 140 grain spitzers. I made a beer run for another case for the barn refrigerator which is also my Thirst Aid Kit! Adam

Well done
I like a story with a happy ending. You can never have too many decent military rifles and Swedes are expensive and hard to find. All the best...

Good deal, enjoy the 6,5x55, great shooting caliber. I'm running 130gr Accubonds thru mine at the moment with great results both on target and on game. |

Dom,
Wie gehts du, Mein Freund? Ich habe zu viel zu tun hier. Ich bin Bauer und Rentner. Und ich bin alt! I have, now, three M38 and one M96 Swede 6.5 X 55 MM arms. All are wonderful guns. I handload the 120, 139, 156 and 160 grain projectiles (Kuglen). Two of my Swedes have the threaded muzzle gizmos which I have eased over by screwing on a 2.5 inch fluted muzzlebrakes that makes a M38 and the M96 look like M14 clones. I like the look and trek the snowy woods in deer season akin to the 1939 Finnish Front. Es ist ein Traum, nicht wahr? Adam

Ya, you're living the dream Adam
Ich bin auch alt, und bald Rentner, aber schaffen muss ich doch noch, haha. You lucky dog. Enjoy the farm and the snowy woods this deer season, and good shooting with your 6,5's. Entweder hat man keine Zeit aber Geld genug, oder keine Geld und viel Zeit!! |

I will give you $10 more than you paid for the Swede to take it off your hands. Take care...

If you ever try Dark Tember for Elk or Moose.Try Hornady 6.5 x55.I have taken two of each with them. All one shot pass through kills.Longest shot was a Moose at 110 yards. It was a real pane getting them out.Take a look at them. The numbers are all there.

Adam,
If you ever feel froggy and want to build a Swede Sporter take a look here: http://huntingnut.com/index.php?name...article&sid=42 The Swede makes a fine sporter where most folks can do a lot of the work themselves. Ed

Rapier,
I have handled some very nice sporter Swedes that are second to no other commercial rifles. I built a sporter or two and while the rifles are nice and accurate, the cost was a bit high and the wait was a year or more for each. Most of my arms are "as issued" because I am a historian and prefer them that way. Many of my war horses see the hunting fireld every year. Be well. Adam

Hey you are back on line. Good on you.
I wrote the article to help folks whom might want to build a sporter themselves, in their garage or shop. A to order Swede costs way to much, as you noted. I understand about the call of the history of the guns. Sometimes I keep one or two as original but usually the majority get altered. One day I will find an original M-94 Cav Carbine and go ahead and choke down the $25 VS $500 or so they are bringing now. But even the "original" 94s I see at shows have been messed with. Glad you are back up and running, PIA, isn't it. Ed
