Buying a pre 64 mod 70 can be like walking into a mine field if you don't know what you're doing... most are worth at or more than what you're describing $500... scopes, well I personally don't think they add value, whether or not the seller believes they do. It'll probably be an above ok or screaming deal, if it's all original. Some can go more that $1000, but I'm not trained enough to know those $500 differences. If it's a Balfor B scope, probably worth in the range of $70-110, which is why if prefer to deal on gun only and they can keep the scope. Buying guns is like buying a car. Personal preference and all about if you "want" to spend the money for what the seller is asking. I'm not a mod 70 fan, so I'd let it walk even if it was a screaming deal...you may choose to do otherwise. I do like the caliber though!
Scopes... I don't buy used, unless they have a lifetime warranty and can be shipped back to manufacture if they aren't true. But still who wants that hassle? A $100 used scope definitely isn't worth my time, so if I was an interested party, I'd tell the seller, gun only and give me a new price, minus $100

Nice find!
I think I would have bought it, too. Is the Balfor scope a plain Balfor (adjustments in the mount) or a Balfor B. Reason I ask is, the B&L mount with the adjustments in it is in some demand. I've seen them go for 150$. 1954 should be the plain Balfor, if the rifle was scoped when originally purchased. The Balfor B was B&L's first internal; adjustment scopes - quite good scopes, for their era, but not up to today's glass, especially the lens coating.

Jack, it's a plain Balfor.........originally scoped and used only twice. Bought it off a lady at church that knew I hunted. Late hubby used it twice and put it up.
Due to circumstances I didn't feel like negotiating much. Dan

Good catch
I like pre-64 Winchesters and the price is right. If I liked it, it would have come home with me. All the best...

Dan,
GO for that pre-64! A few years ago I got a Model 70 .30-06 made in 1939 for $400 with a Koll-Morgan scope from that era. It is my annual Opening Day Rifle Deer firearm. Happily, my 150 grain JSP handload is +1.5 inches at 100 yards. Pre-64 Winchesters are an "endangered" Species. In that same lot I got a M1894 .30-30 Rifle with octagon barrel made in 1918. I use that rifle for woods hunting here in PA. Remember, we are ONLY Custodians of our treasured firearms, for a while. One day someone else will hold our treasured arms. Go for what pleases YOU! Thanks, I just need to work up a load that this one likes! Got my 06 and 270 for backup for this season.
