finding the right bullet

I have a 30-06 Remington model 700 and i have to shoot around 400 yards or better to get a deer,so i was wondering if someone could give me an idea of what type of of bullet and grain i should reload to fit my needs to bring down a deer at that range. I live in Nevada and i have to shoot that far.

Personally I would use a Nosler 165 gr accubond with a notch below top velocity loading

The 165 Accubond would be a good choice.
I'd definitely go for a bullet of around 165 grains. Other bullets to look at might be a Hornady SST or a Berger in that weight range.

Thanks guy's, I wasn't to sure what type and grain to reload,i never had to shoot that far before,so i was kinda in the dark. I really appreciate your help,thanks again.

Why "Must" you shoot 400 yards at deer?

What size group do your shoot at 400 yards? What do you do on windy days?

I have a 400-yard range in my big hayfield and shoot there most days. I have never shot 400 yards at a deer, I stalk closer to be fair to the deer.

My Kimber 30-06 shoots the 165 SST great in Hornady Superformance ammo. I can keep 'em at around 3/4 in. A friend who is numb from the neck up can do under a 1/2 inch. And I can get my exact copy reloads to do the same. The SST is a good bullet for long range deer...but not heavily enough constructed for elk..IMO. 400 yes IS a long shot for deer but if you learn to shoot at that range... not too far. My first antelope was a bit farther at 475 so it isn't impossible. I took a fellow deer hunting who was in a wheelchair..so not easily mobile and he took a nice critter at about 350. I expected a shot at under 125 yds. Didn't happen. One of the neatest parties I ever took for geese was a husband and wife. He was in a wheelchair and she sat right with him..Had to keep 'em covered and rig a way to keep 'em hidden in the open. Got geese within 10 Ft of them by flagging and lots of decoys. Was an exciting day for them...BTW...that gal could shoot.... especially for a Yankee. He was pretty good too. 6 geese 8 shots

Oh another thing... get a decent rangefinder..I use a Leica. Do some practice from 300-400 yds and make up some drop tables..drift too. Much harder to do the drift... tough to figure wind. Luckily when morning deer hunting esp it can be very still... even here in Wyoming. Afternoon not as much... so if 350-400 yds is gonna be your range learn to shoot that far as well as you can.
