Here on the farm I have two benches set up in the big hayfield and have a lasered 400 yard range. I have flags and marker post every 100 yards and target frames at 100, 200, 300 and 400 yards. At 400 yards, a groundhog has a burrow directly below the target frame! Maybe he/she has a death wish. I dunno. I know I will not harm the varmit.

My range faces West so the sun is not a problem in the mornings. Our winds are prevailing westerlies with an occasional North or South wind. I am working with the .243 and .25-06 at present. I shoot an average of twice a week at all distances. I am learning as I go. Many things I am relearning.

Past 500 yards the 25-06 starts losing the ability to be worthwhile as a hunting cartridge with any bullet lighter than the 110 gr Accubond. It would be ok for antelope and smaller deer to about 600. That is a very long way and I don't shoot at game farther than that. Unless with no wind or absolutely direct bearing wind it will get pushed a long way. I use it for P dogs and yotes but wow. The 243 is only a 400 yard round at the best. With a starting speed(if you are lucky) of 3000 FPS at the muzzle with a 100 gr bullet it ain't got much oomph past the 400 mark..for ethical hunting anyway. The big ol boomers Petey and those guys shoot are better I guess. But the wind is usually a constant here and really hard to figure at those long ranges. But it is fun to shoot targets at those ranges and beyond. My range is 500 yards to the longest targets. I do have about a mile to shoot the Barrett though. It even wakes my neighbors up..One of 'em came over to see what all the noise was about. He wants to buy one... I really am not competent at a mile.

Yes, long range is interesting. Every windless day is a day for lots of long range shooting. Westerly winds are ok, but the north wind is tough. Last August it was 98 degrees and sunny. The mirage made my gongs "float" in the scopes so bad that I had to give up for the day.

Many friends come by and shoot the 200 and 300 yard targets to dial in their scoped rifles. The local gun club only has a 100 yard range which does not bode well for ascertaining a 300 yard zero.

I agree 600 is way freaking out there.
I killed a coyote pushing 800 the other day. Even I was amazed shocked stoked I couldn't believe it.

I've been shooting lots of rocks lately to lol.

Hoping to get my 260 running soon but man the 2506 is working well with 115 boss.

And yeah mirage is a killer.

Hoping get out and get some chucks at long range.

Not sure how far id take a deer. Need to shoot more

I like the .284 bullets myself and certainly the larger 30 caliber rounds for longer ranges. I've taken a few animals over 600 yards without the aid of a tactical type scope but I've been shooting longer ranges for most of my adult life. I wouldn't mind putting said scope on a .300 RUM, that could be an interesting combination. With some of the long range type bullets today (Cutting Edge Bullets, Berger, Sierra etc) one could find endless possibilities. However, like most of us, my ranges on big game tend to be much more moderate than long range. In Africa, I'd say my average range on big game is 250 yards; with dangerous game 25-70 yards. I'll be on Buffalo next week but with a heavy hitter. Cheers, gg

What's a tactical scope. Does it make **** for You? Seems that is marketing term.

Technology has come a long ways u can crank l knobs or use the reticle if I don't have time I use reticle it gets

This long range stuff is amazing to amazing how it actually works in real world crunch the numbers,punch the paper crank the knobs shoot the fur.
