Old European markings on scope 4x81

Hi All,

Now I am puzzled, I had a scope by Khales which had 6x81 marked on it yet it was no where near 81mm objective lens size more like 45 mm, I am now buying an older Pecar which is marked 4x81, whihc is again more like 40mm in the objective, so what the heck does the 81 stand for, light transmisson or something?

Anyone with any ideas?

Interesting, but I also have no clue. Don't think it would stand for light transmission, would guess a model type number, Waidmannsheil, Dom.

Square root of 81 is 9.

4 (power of scope) multiplied by9 = the diametre in mm. of front glass (ie,36 mm.).
