bare minimum draw weight
What is the minimum draw weight to be considered "safe" for deer hunting. It is set at 52# and im wondering if that is ok or not. if it matters or not it shoots at 290 fps.

A 52lb draw weight bow is fine for shooting whitetails. How do you know that your arrows are flying 290 ft/sec??
My 70lb Matthews does NOT shoot that fast. VH |

52lbs and 290 fps is very impressive. I too would be interested in the type of bow and the arrow you are using.
52lbs is more than enough to hunt whitetails. |

52# is adequate to take almost anything on 4 legs in the north american continent except the biggest of bears, moose etc ... speed is not all that important as is arrow placement and broadhead sharpness ... read some of the accounts of early bowhunters and the type of equipment they used. you might be surprised.

My bows IBO is 331fps my set up is 27" 71# with a 369 gr arrow and am only getting 277fps. My bow was the 5th fastest bow built in 2004 according to a Test done by an archery magazine.
What type of setup do you have to get 290fps? did you mean 190fps? my old Hoyt at 68# with the same draw and a 335gr arrow at best was 210fps Last edited by 300 RUM; 08-08-2005 at 09:34 PM. |

draw weight
the bare minimum draw weight for huntin whitetails is about 3 to 6 pounds lighter than you CAN pull. if you got a 70 pound bow shootin 315 fps and you cant draw it back without havin a problem then it aint really gunna matter what weight you pull. test out a buncha draw weights and figger out your max weight you can pull without gruntin then back it off like i said about 3 to 6 or until its comfortable.i hope this helps.

Here in 10-E-C the hunter ed book said that any bow that will shoot 100yds is legal.

Not to start anything here, but the first deer I shot was at 20yds with a bear mini-mag set at 26lbs. Arrow penetrated about 15", deer ran about 250yds.

In good ole West by GOD Virginia 45# is the minimum I figure if Howard Hill can kill an elephant with that then a whitetail is no problem. 290 fps does seem awful fast but who am I to talk I still shoot a Bear Grizzly recurve.
