SKS owners....please look

I have a couple Yugo SKS that have been rebarreled by the yugo armory.....They shoot the russian ammo just fine .....I am wondering if there is a market for replacement barrels for the SKS.....I wouldn't mind having an accurate barrel ...The question is, would you pay $100 for a target barrel for an SKS?....

Personally, I would not pay $100 for a target barrel for an SKS because it is not a target gun with target sights, trigger and all the rest. I have read that the various SKS arms from different nations do not all barrel up the same due to differences. If you stay within your gun's nationality for a replacement, and functional, barrel it may be alright. I like the SKS, own too many and reload for them all. In the final analysis, the SKS is a battle rifle and should be enjoyed for being so. Hope this helps.

I agree. I would never pay $100.00 to re-barrel mine with any kind of barrel.

I own two SKS and really enjoy shooting them. One is Chinese. It appears more crude in its finish both metal and wood. The fixed magazine has been replaced by a detachable 30 round mag. If you like throwing a lot of lead with decent accuracy, this is the gun.

The second is a Russian gun. The finish is better and the gun just seems to shoot better. It still has the fixed magazine, but I have about 30 striper clips for easy reloading.

Both guns are deadly out to 125 yards with fixed sights. Now that I have glasses I can probably shoot further.

I use the surplus Russian ammo you can get at any pawn shop or gun show. The powder leaves a terribly mess, but the guns have never jammed.

I love them for what they are to me, cheap to buy, cheap to shoot and a lot of fun for the weekend. My daughter loves to shoot them also due to the light recoil.

I would say enjoy it like it is and put the target barrel on a better gun.

I do enjoy shooting the SKS.....Very economical...$125. for a rifle and $90 for a thousand rounds of ammo...lots of fun for very little money......I would think that there are some ultimate examples of the SKS out there...there are many accessories available and the trigger can be improved by those that want to tinker....Are there any sources for a replacment barrel? Foreign or domestic?Anybody out there have a hotrod SKS ??? I'd like to hear about how others use and shoot the SKS... ....Red

Mine has the semi-scarce issue FIXED 20 ROUND MAG.

Shoots OK, have a huge mess of ComBloc ammo on strippers for it, but the next time I take it out will prolly use some NC/BO PMC or Hornady in it.

(I keep getting these weird twinges the cheapo imported C/BE & NC/BE stuff might dry up. I'm prolly a bit paranoid, but WTF???)

From the feedback I've gotten from all & sundry who aren't just "keyboard shooters" the only ComBloc longarm one stands a chance of getting hold of that's capable of decent groupage would be a "Vasily Zaitsev special" 91/30 PU scoped Mosin-Nagant. (Apparently the Dragunovs leave a bit to be desired)

Not quite counting as "ComBloc" per se is the scarce Croatian "Manda" rifle--which looks like a German PzB. 39 with a Remington 700 type bolt assembly, and a Picatinny rail machined into the reciever! Only available in ONE calibre... .50 M2 Browning!

(Tito's Yugoslavia was "Non-Aligned" from 1948 to the breakup, and the at-long-last-independent-again Republic of Croatia is apparently attempting to go for Swiss grade neutrality, or at the VERY least, Non-alignment like India still has. Doesn't quite count as ComBloc by any stretch of the imagination.)

Adam was right on regarding concerns about upgrading the SKS. It is a fine combat arm as is, but there are much better candidates in pursuit of accuracy. A few months back, a chap came to our NMC rifle match with an SKS where we shoot targets at 100 yards (slow fire standing, rapid fire sitting, rapid fire prone and slow fore prone). He was a game fellow and tried his best. He declined to use a club M1 Garand and G.I. ammo. Unfortunately, his score was rather low due to his shooting abilities and the rifle. All the best...

Various rifles are permitted to shoot the National Match Course. Most of our members shoot AR-15s, M1As and M1 Garands. Recently, we shot our Battle of the Bulge Match and some folks used a 1903A3, a U.S. 1917 Enfield and an M1 Carbine along with the rifles already mentioned. We even had snow flurries.

Not sure what rifle suffered a cracked receiver at Camp Perry or the circumstances. All the best...

Was there "Equal Time" for the OTHER side at the Battle of The Bulge Match??

(as in some folks using G-43's and Kar98K's??? )

Last year, I used a Kar98k to shoot the match while I ran it. My fellow shooters were surprised at how fast the bolt could be cranked in rapid fire using stripper clips. This was a fun match and the scores were not reported to the NRA.

This year, the match was an Approved NRA Tournament and the Match Director (myself) cannot shoot in any match they run. I offered the same Kar98k to my nephew, but he preferred his M1 Garand. All the best...

Get a copy of Gun List or Shotgun News. There a many people selling parts & acc'ys for the sks and other mil surplus shooters.
My SKS came from the Republic of VN It's a Mil issue Chi Com with a non rot plastic stock.
It's original owner had no further use for it. It had a mil 20 rd fixed mag in it which was very unusual to say the least.
It's a good shooter and never jams like the Norinco sks's and I'd never stand anywhere under 350 yds and let somebody competent shoot at me.
