.22 barrell liner ?
...have a spare Romanian bolt .22. Would like to have the barrell religned with a liner having a faster rate of twist (1 in 9 or 1 in 10) to shoot Aguilla's 60gr .22 rimfire. I think this would be a hoot on squirrels. I have several .22's but none are accurate with this round. I have managed to hit a couple of squirrels with it and the results were very good.
Any one know of a manufacturer making .22 liners in a faster rate of twist? Installation cost ? Am I nutz, or what? |

Ya know, this is one of those sad instances where I dont know if it won't be worth your while.
I dont know of any commercially available liners. Which means it will need to be made. Which in turn means , yep $$$$$$$$$. I am certain they ARE out there made for gunshops, but would need to be installed by a smith. That means more shop time and more$$$ You could almost put a new gun together for the same price. .22, while my favorite round of all time, is not very "cool" any more and hasn't been for some time. I had to do my own in order to get it done at ALL!!! That being said, this is only limited to my experience and geography. I will ceratinly keep my eyes and ears opened. I would say to cut my losses and try again. Sadly. We have become far too "disposable" in our ways here in the good ol' US of A. If you choose to undertake this project, I applaud youfor going "against the grain" and conventional wisdom that says newer and less expensinve is better. Does the gun shoot other rounds accurately? What is the current rate of twist? Cy

cyclops;
...thanks for the input, sound advice. I'm just intrigued by that particular round. I have several .22's and shoot everything from BB caps through "hyper" velocity ammo (emphasis on the HYPE). ...and yes I do tend to go off on tangents...20 years ago, before it was a sin to turkey hunt with a rifle, I acquired an Interarms MK-10 Mini Mauser in .223, had my 'smith chop off the BACK of the barrel and rechamber for .221 Rem Fireball (This was before Kimber started building rifles in this caliber). Rate of twist wont allow me to shoot light (hornet) weight bullets but the 55 gr. make the same diameter hole (when loaded properly). Don't get to turkey hunt much any more but cayotes are becomming a problem, may just be a use for the heavier bullets after all. |

Barrel Liners
Check the Brownells catalog. The used to have bbl liners for 22's. Don't remember the twists but do remember that they had a neat way to glue the darn things in the bore...after boring it out of course

Or you could actually put a .22 sleeve into one of the barrels of an O/U shotgun, course you'd have to make sure you get the twist you want, if available. It's called an "einstecklauf", but they are fairly expensive. Shorter lengths are also made for the .22 rf models, which are a bit cheaper. Just thot I'd throw it out there for FYI -- I've got one in .22 mag about 12" long in the top right barrel of a drilling. Waidmannsheil, Dom.
Here's a pic of a full length, probably in caliber .222 or so, not fully installed yet, just showing how it goes in. |

Dear Ears,
Hows about relining to 17 Mach2? You got .22s already. I did one for a guy here in Or and he loves it!. I did my 77/22 into one but bored/threaded the receiver and used a new BBL. What FUN!!! |

kailua custom;
This is just one of those things that rattle around in my head 'til I make it happen. Like a rifle chambered in .221 Fireball...long before Kimber did it. I like the .22 long rifle Agila round...I'll find or make something to shoot it. Thanks for the suggestion...I'm just very hard headed. |
