The joys of shooting a .44 Cap&Ball Revolver.

Apparently cabin fever is setting in early because I have 4 new shooters signed up for my BP firearms instruction class. Last week we covered flintlocks and this week we shot the Cap & Ball revolvers. I have the 1860 Colt and the M1858 Remington New Army. Both guns like 25 grains of 3F BP and a .454" ball.

All students, like myself, preferred the Remington for many reasons. Happily, my Remington shoots about one inch high at 25 yards and it is a nice gun to handle and shoot. I got it from Cabels's a few years ago and I think an order for 4 more such guns went in yesterday from my students who saw it in the catalog I brought to the range.

Next week we do the percussion thing with a T/C Hawken .50 caplock and the M1853 .577 calibre Enfield.

I hope many others are recruiting new shooters because they are also voters. They also feel a bit more comfortable getting into muzzleloader shooting under the supervision of experienced shooters. All my students got BP arms for Christmas and had questions about getting the guns to fire reliably. Spread the word!

I love shooting my 1858 Remington revolver, but the problem is I don't have many places that I can shoot it! I live in the city, and ALL of the indoor ranges refuse to allow it because of the smoke it generates. Most of the outdoor ranges around here are "single load only", and that includse BP revolvers......
