Sub-sonic .30s
Does anybody have any experience shooting or hunting w/ calibers such as the .300 whisper or 30-221. I am trying to decide whether to get a wildcat or just use the .308 win for a suppressed rifle project.
I want a caliber that will effectively kill deer sized game but be able to do it sub-sonic. I am going to build this rifle strictly for a suppressor. Any replies are greatly appreciated. Thank you. |

The .300 Whisper is a .221 case necked up to .30 cal. so they are the same thing. I have a .25 cal. on the .221 case but never messed with sub-soinc loads with it. You do realize you need a class 3 license for the rifle your talking about building.

Builder45, I've been interested in a subsonic 300 Whisper for some time now built on a Contender pistol.
Bullet placement will be important using a narrow 30cal projectile at slow speeds. So I'm thinking a bullet with a larger frontal area would be more effective. Like a 45 long colt loaded with a Hornady 350gr flatpoint or similiar weight bullet. That should have some shock value on a whitetail. You may also need to have a scope with target knobs depending on how far you shoot due to the trajectory of a subsonic round. http://www.quarterbore.com/300whisper/ http://www.lasc.us/RangingShotLongWhisper.htm Since the AWB has ended, this has become more interesting: http://www.model1sales.com/item-deta...u16carpre3.gif Allen

The 300 wisper works pretty well, but the closer, the better. Make sure you get an 8 twist barrel so you can shoot the 240 seirra MK`s. The .308 works also, but imo, it is harder to find a sub-sonic load that shoots well. Another thing about building a sub-sonic load, use the bullets and primers called for in the load data, one time i had a bunch of 180 gr. barnes X bullets laying around and decided to load those instead my normal load of MK`s, the first round popped, made a hissing sound, and never made it out the barrel. Not good.

No experience with those rounds but...did try squib loading '06 using half powder loads and some dacron for case filler, using .307 30-30 bullets gave good results on coyote with out blowing up the pelt.
