BEST 6.5X55 Powder

If you could only use one powder in your 6.5X55 for ever and ever which would it be?

I experimented with a lot of different powders and bullets for my Remington Classic in 6.5x55. Then I discovered VihtaVouri 550 and 560 powders and Lapua Scenar bullets and the experimenting stopped dead. My groups with those components far exceeded anything I had attained with U.S. components. Best wishes.

The 6.5x55 is performs remarkably well with just about any slow powder.

IMR4831, already mentioned, is a fine choice, as is H4350.

The size of the case is such that it is hard to get a load that is near max, and fills the case. H4831SC has a slightly different density from H4831, and that might help you tweak the percent fill thing.

I've been talking to a guy over in the gunboard forums who has rather extensive experience with 6.5x55.

asked him soem reloading questions since i lucked out and managed to get ahold of a Ljungman recently, which will be at it's new home soon as i can payoff the layaway.

he said that he has had very good results with REL 15, and IMR3031, though any powder in that burn range should do ok.

granted this was specifically for a semi-auto, which can be abit picky on how it cycles.

I found many years ago that I could get around 2800 FPS from 140-grain bullets in the 6.5X55 using H4831 (the original stuff). But it was a case full, and had to be loaded carefully to get it all in. Today, I'd try substituting MRP or RE22, since these two have about the same burning rate as H4831, but occupy less volume at the same weight as H4831.

RAZMUZ, FORGOT TO ASK YOU, WHAT KIND OF RIFLE ARE YOU SHOOTING? IF IT IS A 96 MAUSER BE VERY CARFUL WITH LOAD PRESSURES. THEY ARE NOT STRONG LIKE THE WINCHESTERS, REMINGTONS, OR RUGERS ETC.

IF I REMEMBER CORRECTLY THE SWEDE IS ONLY A 46000 CUP ROUND SO BE CAREFULL WITH LOADS IN A MODEL 96.

I have had excellent results with IMR 4350 and 140 gr. bullets. See lot of you folks like IMR 4831 think I will give it a try too. MC

I like IMR4350, my friend likes RL22(hot) I'm also trying Varget which is looking good. BTW I use 125-129gn bulets. capt david

Lyman recommends IMR 4320 for some accuracy loads in the 6.5X55mm and that has worked for me. All the best...

Varget for anything 140 and down.

I have 2 rifles in 6.5 x 55. One is a Remington 700 with a Douglas barrel in standard hunting contour. And the other is a commercial Mauser action with a 26"stainless fluted bull barrel, also a Douglas, mounted in a Millett thumbhole stock. These rifles don't agree on much, but they both like IMR4831 and 140 grain bullets. The charge weight is the only thing that they disagree on.

BTW, please excuse my brain fart. It's not a Millett stock, it's a McMillin. Duh!

Great results using the various 139 & 140 gr. bullets with 4064 in both 6.5 x 55 and 6.5 x 57.
