Squirrels with the .17HMR today
Shot these two suckers today. One right after the other. I shot the one on the right 1st then the 2nd one started barking so I placed a 20gr XTP on the side of his mellon. That made em stop barking quickly Now to clean them.

Obviously a head shot and apparently a neck shot. Good shooting.

I took a couple close up pictures of the head shot. I thought they would be to graphic for the site. Yep, head and neck shot. They didn't even move after they got stuck with the .17hmr. Maybe today I'll be out in the AM for a little more squirrel action.

VarmintSniper,
It looks like the one on the left could use some dental work! lol Nice shooting, how do you like the .17? I looked at one a year or two ago at Bass Pro. 2300fps Later, Phil B. ________ Xl75 Last edited by sniperp1; 02-22-2011 at 04:36 PM. |

sniperp1, I love my .17HMR. If I did buy another one, I think I'd prolly get a CZ Varmit. I just wanted something cheap at the time and + I had some gift certificates to Gander Mountain. I just got a basic Marlin 17v. I'm planning on buying a new stock sometime and replacing my cheap Simmons scope I have on it now with something like a Nikon. I believe it says around 2550fps on the .17v-max. You should look into one, you'll love it

Hi All,
This morning I shot a Grey Squirrel with a head shot but as I don't have a .17 I used what I had with me and as I was actually after Deer it was a 30-30 bolt action rifle. Load was a 130 Grn Hornady spitzer loaded hot. The sguirrel moved OK........ blown off his stump with half his head missing. The 30-30 is a little bit savage on squirrels. Not an easy shot as I had to lean out of the stand to get a shot at his head, sitting normally all I could see was his butt and tail. Didn't take any pictures though. Must get out with the Air rifle and thin a few out

Pretty weak...
Try getting a squirrel with a bow.... that's a challenge... but shooting them with a 22 with a 3X9X40 scope (assumption).... thats childsplay..
This unfortunate guy ate a little too much corn from the bait pile. We were sitting in a ground blind, and I got him from about 20 yards. Then he ran 30 yards with the arrow (just as pictured) and climbed a tree, and died about 40 yards up there.... Took 20 minutes of throwing rocks to get my arrow back. I still don't know how he managed to climb up there with an arrow through his chest and out his rump area? Joel |

Joel, shooting them with a body shot with a bow is childsplay. You want a challenge shoot them in the head at 30 yards. I shot this one at about 28 yards from my tree stand.
This one was shot at 10 yards from the tree stand again. I can tell by your pic that you are using the wrong arrow tips. If you think you need to use feild points put a star washer on the tip before you screw it into the insert. Broadheads work well also (first one caught a broad head). I also suggest if you are using feild point shoot them from a tree stand down to the ground. It pins them to the ground and its easier to hit the spine. Dk |

No Blood?
No blood on the arrow for the black squirrel because.....

I shot it with a field point in the brain stem. You dont ussally get blood from a shot like that, it snaps the neck and the animal is dead instantly. For blood to happen the heart needs to be pumping.

I got a chipmunk once with a bow but it was pretty darn lucky shot for me.

lol, nice shooting guys. I shot a nice fox squirrel this bow hunting season, one came under my climber and I nailed him, then one of his buddies went up in a tree and barked at me for about a 1/2 hour .
Joel@WhiteMoose, you live up in Houghton or have property up there? We have some land in Gladwin. Just carious. |

I've got a place right near Gladwin too! I'm right near "Wildwood" just off the river (tidabawasi). I've been trying to find others in the area to go woodchuck hunting around there. Lots and lots of deer & turkey around there too! Tall Shadow |
