Loved this one Rocky. Had an auction pulled for a Winchester 88 Mag because I didn't state that it held 4 rounds. Ebay is ridiculous.

Yes, eBay is staffed by idiots. I once made the mistake of pointing out to them that CB linear amplifiers, which are commonly posted, are clearly illegal, and can net them serious fines. They assured me that all was well, and that the listed amplifiers were quite legal. Those large fines levied by the FCC against people who sell them were just a figment of my imagination.

Largest source of fraud complaints in Utah = eBay.

I've just about quit shopping there. Too much fraud, and Paypal is the most totally frustrating mess I have ever tried to deal with.

A friend of mine just recently purchased an engagement ring off a vendor on Ebay for $1800. Got the ring and immediately took it to a jeweler. Jeweler appraised it and the ring was exactly as described by the vendor. They insured it for the full value of the ring and that vlaue would be $9300 and change.

I'd say that eBay is no different than any other really big operation: some of what they do is superb, and some of what they do is flawed, some of the people in it are great and some are slime, some of what you see there is genuine and some of it is fool's gold.

The trick is in telling the difference.

I've dealt with good sellers (and buyers!) on eBay, and I've been burned by things that may have been described correctly - but not completely. Fortunately, I've never been faulted for anything I've listed, but the chance for misunderstanding is always present.

On the other hand, I'll agree completely that in regards to anything gun-related, eBay is an ass.

I must say that I am shocked...SHOCKED!...that ebay would allow people to sell something that once came close to being in vicinity of a GUN. Isn't it possible that some of the evil spirits rubbed off?

Even more amazing is that someone would bid $28 for five pieces of used brass. Midway sells 303 brass for about $21 per 100.

Well, after slamming eBay, I turned right around and bought a new Zastava commercial 7x57 barrel through them. The seller had 706 transactions, and a perfect record on feedback... couldn't be too bad a risk.

This barrel is replacing a marginally accurate 8mm barrel on a Yugo, so it should feel right at home (both from Yugoslavia). Hope it turns out to be a decent shooter. 7x57 at full modern pressures is quite a marvelous cartridge. Back of the napkin calcs, based on published loads, say that 2900 fps with 140 grainers should be easy, and 3000 might be safely possible.

Denton, you may find (or maybe not) the napkin calcs to be just a hair optimistic. I'd say 2800 is easily reachable with a 140. 2900, maybe.
At least that's been my experience.
I can tell you that a buncha deer don't know the difference.

Not to get too far off the original topic, but I'll concur with the cartridge recommendation. The 7x57 Mauser has killed every species of animal on the planet - with the possible exception of a blue whale.

They coulda stopped smokless powder development with that one round (the first one!) and we'd be in fine shape still - more than a century later.

Among the many sarcastic questions posted, helping lampoon eBay, was my own small contribution. So the seller favored me with an email, telling me that eBay had yanked his auction. Tried the link again, and sure enough, they pulled it.

Ridiculous.

I'll be very happy with whatever my new caliber does give me, whether it's 2800 or 3000. Jack's exactly right, the deer won't ever know the difference.

The calculation that leads me to believe that it's at least 2900 is this: In similar cartridges I have tested, adding enough powder to increase peak pressure by 2-3,000 PSI also increases MV by 100 fps. In a modern action, you could run the pressure up to 58 KPSI (or even 62 KPSI if you're crazy about getting every last ounce out of it). Listed cartridges are loaded to a max of 51 KPSI. 58 - 51 is 7 KPSI, so you should be able to safely get somewhere between roughly 250 to 350 fps above book. That is, if you instrument the rifle, so you can see the pressure. What this is indicating is, with mid-weight bullets, you might be able to get quite close to 7mm Mag performance. I'm sure that as you go to heavier bullets, there would be more difference.

Some cartridges are very underrated. My instrumented 8x57 gives me 2750 fps with a 175 grain bullet, and at very safe pressures. That result is consistent with European ammo, loaded for modern firearms. My 6.5x55 gives me 3075 fps with 120 grainers, and at measured pressures that are quite conservative.

I must need to defragment my cerebral hard drive.

With H4350 and a 120 grain bullet, the 6.5x55 goes up 3100 PSI per grain, and 65 fps per grain.

With Varget, and a 175 grain bullet, the 8x57 goes up 2975 PSI per grain, and 72 fps.

Using those as a guideline, you should be able to run the 7x57 at 58 KPSI, and get 150 fps more than the book, or around 2850 fps with a 140 grain pill. You'd have go to to 60 KPSI to get 2900, and that last 50 fps just isn't worth it.

Bubble popped.

Jack was right.

Still a dang marvelous round.

Denton, the rifle I often use in 7x57, I get 2800 from a 20" bbl. My best hunting buddy has a 24" bbl on his, and he gets 2900. Both 140 grain.
I load for both, and use Hodgdon 414. 4350 would be a close second choice. I tried both in both rifles. the 414 seemed to shoot groups just as tight or tighter as I got close to max, the 4350 seemed to open up a little. FWIW
2 rifles is a clue, but far from a scientific test sample.
BTW, my buddy's rifle that shoots 140's at 2900 is a Whitworth Mauser- made in Zastava, I believe.
