17s and fur damage

Was at the barber shop with a talkative trapper and fur buyer.

Report: The greatest thing to happen lately is the new 17 cal offerings.

From the smallest for fox to the REM for yotes he says they have noticed a big reduction in damage.

From his talking I gathered that the popularity of the HMR etc increased the awareness of the 17 REM.

Also, I've noticed quite a few more 17 REMs on the racks than has been the norm.

Yote,

How fast that thing goin'?

Went to 40gr VMax in 222 @ a little better than 3500. Am hoping for similar results. Don't wanna buy a new 17. Have some other rifle plans.

BTW, sorry Evan03 ticked you off. I work with a VietNam vet, special ops. He's a pretty beat up fella. Holes and shrapnel enough that he should leak. I was there but out in the ocean a ways, flat top.

Just red a book by a Chaplian, "It Took Heros". Was an outstanding read.

17

Roy (just in case 'yote don't chron).
My 20 grns 17 Rems clock at +4400...But, only problem is, some of 'em are sideways! (Had a 3 shot group where all I could see is ONE bullet in profile....would you call that a zero MOA?)
It likes 25 grns at 4200 very well tho, and no damage...as long as it don't hit a bone going in.

25gr Berger Match, (not the MEF), does really, really well. I load mine .2 under max load and they shoot well and have very little hide damage.

Second choice for fur would be the 25gr VMax.

The heavier bullets tend to penetrate too much and the lighter bullets tend to splash more without penetration.

25gr runnin anywhere close to, + or - 4000 fps is really hard to beat.

With good shot placement, alot of bang flops with no exit. But, if you hit a shoulder bone, expect a splash and big hole. Its a shooters round. But, all guns are. If you shoot a shoulder with any rifle, you are more than likely going to get a big hole to sew.
