1909 Argentine

This rifle is certainly one of the crown jewels of classic Mauser rifles. They are no longer readily available for $37.50, but lightning does strike from time to time. A local gun shop just acquired a collection of military surplus arms and among the horde was a 1909 Argentine and a Carcano 1938 rifle with SA markings. I asked the shop owner to hold these two items until Saturday when I can get a look at them. I will let you know what they look like. All the best...

Gil,

Military collections of old gun owners occasionally show up and the current living collectors flock in and grab up the stuff until the next sale upon the death of the new owners. Oh, wot vanity. That being said, go grab up all the militaries you see and maybe you will shoot and reload for same until the next sale. Wotever.

It depends

I enjoy taking a Saturday morning drive to visit a first class gun shop and talk with the owner and patrons. I do more looking than buying and like the experience of being among like-minded folk.

Can't remember the last time I saw a matching 1909 for sale around here. The prices on GunsAmerica, GunBroker and AuctionArms for these vintage pieces give me chest pains. If I decide to buy this gun, it will be at a fraction of what the websites are charging.

I knew this would happen when the mortgage got paid off. But then, the price of the 1909 is about what I pay every three months for car insurance. I never get to keep anything from the car insurance bill. If I acquire the 1909, it will remain with me. All the best...

P.S. You are welcome to come along to the gun shop.

Gil;
If the 09 action is a nice one, better scarf it up! Built my youngest son a .250 Savage on one of those. Nice.

How right you are. The 1909 Argentine actions and hinged floorplates are going for big numbers these days. This is a fun hobby if you can find good buys and take advantage of them.

I get weary hearing from folks who can afford to buy, but ..."could have, would have, might have, should have...picked up a decent bargain, but just couldn't make the decision. It is their choice. But oh, to hear them whine on and on later of those missed opportunities and speak endlessly about it is tiresome. All the best...
