3 Cops break down door, drag innocent sleeping man outside

Ind. Police Officers Save Man From Burning Apartment

City Fire Chief Jan Smith today praised city police for the lifesaving actions of three officers during an early Sunday morning apartment fire.

Smith said the trio of officers who sped to Pine Crossing Apartments on County Rd. 500 North, just west of S. 13th St. - Sgt. Greg Cook and patrolmen Greg Seffernick and Kriss Affolder - were informed on arrival by neighbors that the occupant of the apartment where the fire was located was probably still inside.

So, said Smith, the three men broke down the front door, entered, and took Jordan Sharp from the front room, where he was reportedly still asleep. Sharp was examined by Adams County Emergency Medical Service paramedics at the scene and was in good condition, according to the fire chief.

Sharp, in his early 20s, was alone in the apartment.

Smith saluted the three city police for their quick response in not only getting to the scene, but also to save a life as smoke built up in the apartment.

Smith further said the police used a fire extinguisher to largely extinguish the fire that had flared on Sharp's kitchen stove after he started cooking a meal, then laid down in the front room and fell asleep.

Smith indicated Sharp also owes his life to residents of the next-door apartment, since he was not awakened by the smoke alarm in his apartment, but the neighbors heard it and called in the alarm, which then brought police as first responders.

The fire call came at 3:56 a.m. Sunday and the fire department was at the scene until 4:41 a.m. Smith said the fire caused little damage, but there was a lot of smoke and heat damage, plus some water damage.
